And now for my weekly thread. Yes I can believe it's not butter.

So my fine feathered friends how do you feel about pairings in shows. Yes thats right, Ross and Rachel, Aang and Katarra, Haruhi and Kyon. How do you feel about them, do you give a shit or not? Are they a good plot device? Or are they just unnecessary, or are they just nice. Basically what are your thoughts about pairings in shows. Also, what are your thoughts about fan pairings?

Me personally I'm a sucker for a decent, good, or terrible love story, but only so long as the pairing is within the series. None of this "Zutarra" bullshit.

So, GO!

I don't care about them, so long as they don't come the flying fuck out of no where.

I generally don't really care. I can't get past the fourth wall business when it comes to television, so I see it as nothing more than a plot device/ratings-grabber.

Side-note: the beginning of your post made me think of the book "Mountain Man dance moves". Thank you for that. I'd completely forgotten about it being somewhere amongst my 5 bookcases.

I thought that this thread was about paintings and it took me three reads of that paragraph to understand...

I guess it adds sort of an interesting way for the fans to try and figure stuff out, if you get what I'm saying. Personally, I don't care. Most of the time, it will be hinted by the creators of the show, which really doesn't make it all that creative...

I don't get all the shipping stuff. Really.

But I did enjoy the creators of Avatar constantly teasing the Zutara shippers. It's hilarious.

As long as it doesn't ruin the plot and goes hand in hand with it I am fine with pairing in video games, books and other forms of entertainment I don't care about.

i find that they further character development, thus making the viewer more familiar with the characters increasing the possible relatability

its usually a good plot device if the writers can't think of anything else to do

I don't mind a it as long as it makes sense and, as robert632 put it, it doesn't come "the flying fuck our of nowhere."

Fan pairings though, I hate them because they NEVER make sense EVER. For each and every fan pairing I've ever come across I've found myself wondering what deranged circle of Hell those deluded fans pulled it out of.

I do normally like those little relationships. Like you, I am a bit of a sucker for em. However, I actually like it to make some sort of sense.

Its damn hard for me to explain. However, I really don't know much about all those fan pairings. From what I understand though, a lot of the time they can be kind of odd. But I have no idea.

It was so funny seeing the fan bases react to their bone being given them as they bite down it got snatched :p

Over and over again.

I will say this though, the one positive about Zutara is it has inspired some good art....not all of it, god no! But some of it is quite good.

I like them, although I'm sort of the same as you in that I'm a sucker for romance. The story can be absolute garbage, but put a decent romance with semi-likeable characters in there and I can ignore that. On the fan side of things, I ship a few pairings. Mostly just NanoFate though. That being Nanoha and Fate from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, a series that I first watched AFTER reading a few fanfics for it.

..Yes, I read fanfiction. It's my guilty little pleasure.

Fine unless they start doing full episodes on it that take away from the main story than it starts to iritate me.

Romances...It depends, theres nothing more cringeworthy when your main character is after the supporting character, And you can see it coming a mile off. But then again, a bit of romance in some[/I] stories helps plot. But in others it just comes across as stupid (im looking at you ODST).

It all depends on the way its shown.

As long as it doesn't ruin the story of the show, they are fine. Except, Ross and Rachel. Why? Because of Rachel. I hate that *****! Ross was so close to marrying Emily, then Rachel shows up and ruins it. And for the record, they were on a break!
