As unfortunate as this is (and it is), you can't exactly blame AT&T for wanting to defend what they probably perceive as their territory.
You made me think of this from breaking bad:

But yeah, this sounds like at&t want to watch the development of this.

Oh how I wish AT&T would just .. die.

Honestly, it would be the best thing that could happen to the US to be rid of that terrible company. They are one of the primary reasons the US's internet is such garbage compared to other nations, they try to make everything as difficult as possible for anyone trying to make it better. They just overall are a terrible company and terrible for the US in the long run and we would all be better off if the company ceased to exist. Horrid customer service, getting away with illegal BS all the time and focus more on screwing people over rather than providing a good service. They just try to sue and block anyone who tries to do better, because offering better service in the US would be " unfair trade practices."

Problem with a well priced quality high speed internet for a cable company like AT&T is that it will cannibalize their cable subscriptions to services like Netflix.

They started by selling you TV. Then with the infrastructure in place they got to sell you internet too, making them even more glorious profits. But then the internet gets too good, and suddenly people can get their TV on it too and cut that subscription. Massive conglomerates like these cable companies don't know how to downsize their profit margins which are on the verge of a potential collapse, so they lash out and become even more evil.

In my opinion that situation is at the root of all the scummy things they do. They want to charge you for each individual service: phone, TV, internet, but if the internet gets too good it's able to do the job of the other two without needing to incur their cost.

Finally. Fucking finally.
Looks like AT&T is about to learn what "Adapt or Die" means...again, ironically.

Not a surprise. Competition is a good thing but they don't want any, so they can sit on fleecing customers for less, while maintaining the archaic throttling and caps. With 1gb and 2bg (coming from Comcast) suddenly, there's no need to throttle or cap. Enough for everyone.

Thumbs up for Kansas.

Would love 1-2gb here in the U.K, so that the packages we get would stop piece-mealing out different speeds.

Fibre is in the U.K, but its seems that many providers are down playing or squeezing it, in the same way that tv manufacturers did with pushing HD Ready, before Full 1080 HD became standard across the board.

The problem with that analogy is Walt actually offered a superior product!

About damn time. Seriously, it seems like people in this country forgot how to use legislation to encourage competition, rather than crush it. I blame the democrats and republicans for simplifying our political system into "big government vs small government." And corruption. Can't forget corruption.
Let's not forget how the very concepts of "big government vs small government" have also been corrupted by this struggle. I know people who would side with AT&T on the grounds that the government should not compete with private corporations, that it creates monopolies and destroys competition. And that the government intervening in this way is socialism. Ironic, eh?
