Atari Pulls Out of E3

Atari [http://www.atari.com] has announced that it will not be exhibiting at this year's E3, just three weeks before the show is set to begin.

"Atari has made the proactive decision to attend but not exhibit at this year's E3 event," the company said in a statement to Champions Online [http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/12/atari-pulls-out-of-e3-current-plans-in-question/] and other to be announced titles."

A representative added that Atari had no plans for other press events during the E3 show in Los Angeles, but would not comment further. Joystiq speculated that the company could simply be out of cash and unable to attend as a result, pointing to the recent surprise announcement that the initial release of Ghostbusters in Europe will be published by Sony [http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/sony-publishing-ghostbusters-in-europe-psp-version-resurrected/] as a PlayStation exclusive as evidence that Atari could simply be tapped out. Atari has said it will issue a more detailed explanation "sometime soon."

The pullout seems to have caught event organizers by surprise; at the time of writing, Atari was still listed on the Los Angeles Convention Center [http://www.e3expo.com/].

Well, I believe Atari was largely responsible for the death of Troika (forcing them to destroy "Temple Of Elemental Evil" by going with an earlier build due to some of the adult content... bloody censors, then there is all the alleged problems with NWN2 around similar lines, etc...).

As far as I'm concerned I hope they croak. Had they been smart enough to back the heck off they probably would have had a few more successes under their belt, they probably would never have been here.

But hey, they can always hock the remaining prizes from their old 2600 "swordquest" Tournament. Allegedly the crown and sword still exist, some goober melted down the Talisman after winning it.

E3 not pregnant.

Sorry I couldn't resist. But yeah, can't say I'm particularly sorry about this after what they did with Ghostbusters. I follow E3 every year but I don't think I'll miss Atari being there.
