Atari Wants to Prove Activision Wrong

Phil Harrison is doing his best to prove Activision's publishing strategy wrong by turning Ghostbusters into a profitable gaming franchise.

By acquiring the Ghostbusters game rights [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87293], Atari head Phil Harrison added a popular movie license to his turnaround repertoire.

The rights were conveniently passed up [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87255-Why-Activision-Ditched-Riddick] by Activision-Blizzard's CEO Bobby Kotick, who didn't consider the game to "have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential" and "become a $100 million dollar" franchise.

Harrison told MCV [http://www.mcvuk.com/news/32720/Harrison-Well-prove-Activision-wrong] that he intends on proving Kotick wrong, squeezing opportunity from thrown out titles.

"What Bobby, perhaps unhelpfully said, was that those games were franchises which wouldn't make $100m of revenue and generate sequels," explained Harrison. "If that's his benchmark, then fine - and we'd love to aspire to the same benchmarks. But you know what? I would love to turn Ghostbusters into a $100 million franchise, just to prove him wrong."

Rather than simply settling for sloppy seconds, CEO David Gardner also believes games like Ghostbusters have potential under Atari. He stated, "We evaluated those games and just because they aren't a good fit for Activision doesn't mean they aren't a good fit for us."

I liked the old NES one. Any game where the final boss fight is running under its feet by perfectly timing a quick time event clearly can only get better.

In my opinion, the only good thing ActivisionBlizzard does well is, and always will be, in the hands of Blizzard. I'm rather glad they aren't touching Ghostbusters. Atari will surely do a much better job with it.

No matter how many times I hear that quote from the Activision CEO, I still can't believe that he said that.

I'm not sure that this game can get to the 100mil mark. I hope it can, but I don't think it will.

It can with our help. This is a chance to right what once went wrong. To break down the walls that surround us. To fight as one against the oppressive regime. To boldy go...

Well, or just to have a damn good game that doesn't spawn embarrassingly bad sequels.

I'm honestly not the excited about this game. Not only have there been maybe 2 good movie games ever, but I've never watched Ghostbusters. *runs for it*

Don't get me wrong, I love Ghostbusters, but the games kinda have me going "meh." The graphics look great, but it just isn't grabing me the way it should. Perhaps Atari will change that?

I think we'd ALL LOVE to see every abandoned franchise prove Activision wrong.
Haha... so true... so true.

Back on topic. I hope that this game will be brilliant... it seems good so far. Hopefully Atari doesn't pull an Alone In The Dark on this one.

Well him actually saying that, I can understand. I assume EA / Ubisoft CEO's say the same things in meetings. What I can't believe is that it got out, or that he said it publicly.
Also, if the game is good, I'll buy it, if it's not, I won't. So it's really up to Atari to make this game great and if they manage to pull that off they'll have a guaranteed buy from me.

The developers are under pressure now :) I hope they realize that if they make a fps or some kind of grinding game out of this the game isn't going to be interesting enough to get past the 100m barrier...

But by proving Activision was wrong, Atari is proven right. This must never come to pass. Ghostbusters, your sacrifice will be forever remembered.

Hold on. I'm not so sure thast its good that they're refferring to what is likely to be a one off game as a "franchise".
Yeah this has me nervous too. He's not saying that Activision was wrong for saying games SHOULD generate 10 mil and 20 sequels, he's saying he thinks the titles they thought couldn't, can.

And now he wants them to do it.

Ghostbusters 2k8, now with eco-friendly hybrid vehicles. Take that 1980s.
As long as it's a Hurse, I don't care whats under the Hood. Egon could probably invent something that runs on trash and only gives off water vapor. He built unliscened atomic reactors.

What? (o_O)

Seriously, that's retarded. If a game about a hedgehog that runs really fast or a plumber who squishes mushrooms to save a princess can turn into huge franchises, then surely a game about a gang of misfit scientists who zap ghosts and trap them in a box has a shot.

The IP a game is based on means nothing. How fun the game actually is to play is everything. Done right, this thing has huge potential. The IP has the advantage of bringing with it really, freakin' cool toys like the PKE Meter, Ecto Goggles and Proton Packs as well as a built-in "quest/level" + boss fight structure that practically screams "video game". Not to mention one heck of a catchy theme song. :)

Better movies than this have been slaughtered in the past by video game companies, but this particular franchise stands a better chance than most of surviving the conversion without feeling forced or inconsistent with the spirit of the movies.
