I heard some people talking about having an ati card (I have an hd 5770) and also using an nvidia card (MSI gs 240) for physX. Is that possible?

Google it. It can be done but you have to use some software hacks and a bit of faffing about. I read a how to guide in a PC gaming magazine but I can't remember which one. Probably the Australian Mag PC Power Play.

not really you can only crossfire two cards of the same series and although there may be hacks for it i would not risk it physx is meh anyway

It isn't like crossfire or Sli. From memory you set it up so that each card is running a separate monitor then make the nvidia run monitor tiny and off screen and diagonal and set the dual screen setting so you have to hold space to move the mouse off your main screen. Like I said you need a software hack because Nvidia disabled the ability to do this in the most recent drivers.
