Atkinson Government Cracks Down on R-Rated Videos

The South Australian government is at it again, but this time it's hit movie distributors and retailers with a restrictive new law on packaging that some are claiming was kept quiet until it was too late to be challenged.

The new law forces stores that rent or sell videos in South Australia to display movies rated R18+ in plain packages showing nothing but the film's title. Restrictions against "posters, pamphlets or other printed material" have also been put into place, with fines of up to $5000 ($4632 US) awaiting anyone who displays this stuff out in the open. As a result, films like Mad Max [http://www.amazon.com/Taxi-Driver-Two-Disc-Collectors-Robert/dp/B000R8YC18/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1280783086&sr=1-1] will only be available in the unmarked packaging unless they're kept in a segregated "adults only" section.

Critics say the blank packaging will prevent viewers from making informed decisions about what they watch and also point out that the vagaries of Australia's rating system means that the packaging for Fight Club [http://www.amazon.com/Saw-Leigh-Whannell/dp/B0006SSOHC/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1280783138&sr=1-1], featuring a photograph of actors Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, will not.

Even worse in the eyes of some in the industry is the fact that the law was apparently ushered in very quietly, leaving many of them unaware of its existence until it was too late to debate or contest it. Mark Spratt, the managing director of Australian independent film distributor Potential Films [http://www.potentialfilms.com/], was "gobsmacked" when he heard about the law, saying, "It's gone completely under the radar."

"It's certainly discouraging people to look for these films, discouraging shops from stocking them and [creates] an extra hassle for [distributors]," he added.

The law was announced by the office of South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson, notorious [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96194-Michael-Atkinson-Once-Again-Dismisses-Gamers] among gamers for his opposition to an R18+ rating for videogames. It wasn't Atkinson who introduced this one, however, but Family First Member of Parliament Dennis Hood, who claimed his goal was to have the offending videos "quarantined, so children could walk into the store without being exposed (to R-rated titles.") Posters, stand-ups and other such materials in theaters, however, will remain unaffected.

Oh god the government is so right, yesterday I saw this R rated DVD cover and then I murdered my family. If only I lived in Australia this terrible outburst could've been prevented.

What does it matter if they are exposed to R18+ movies? They can't buy it without ID saying they are over 18.

wait, to get mad max you have to look at the porno section? that is.... wow. and whats wrong with people wanting to look for an adult film. should they make book stores put the bible amongst the playboys all because it mentions boobs, drugs, sex, and violence. nooooo, that would be putting Atkinson's fucking code of law in the back room lit by a red light.

Wow, this is really, really stupid.

I can understand the reasoning behind keeping R-Rated films in a segregated "adults only" section, but removing the covers? This might be the most meaningless case of censorship I have ever heard of. What the hell Australia?

THAT IS FUCKED UP MAN! Geez, if that was the UK, Michael Atkinson would have had a petrol bomb thrown into his house by not (not harming him or his family of course *angelic look*). Hes such a fanny.

So are we going to just abandon that country? Set up convoys? How about assassinating Michael Atkinson? With Yahtzee's hat.

Is Atkinson some sort of dictator?
Controls Media? Check
Will never let go of unnecessary amounts of power? Check
Secret police force that kidnaps you in the middle of the night? Maybe

Ps. is Atkinson in for life? or can they vote him out or something.

Oh C'mon, you guys are Australians for god's sake! You live on a landmass that is actively trying to kill you. DVD covers should be small stuff compared to that.

OT: The law is completely pointless though.

I wonder how many kids actually care about this sort off stuff? Did they get a letter from a poor child who has suffered from the sights of movie packaging or was it just more old men trying to think for the children.

Actually, Fight Club flashes an uncensored penis across the screen for 1/48th of a second before the ending credits roll. Oh well. A bit odd I might add.
