I guess this goes here

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/in-depth/attorney-general-michael-atkinson-to-quit-front-bench/story-fn2sdwup-1225843341005

As happy i am to get the chance for an R18 discussion, i am a little sad to see him go i would have much prefered to get people to sit down and talk with him and convince him some more, rather then getting pressure from his party to stand down.

Although most Australian gamers can see this as a victory, i dont think the majority acted in good form with the spam bombs to his email and offensive tone, although that could have been from some more underage people who knows, just wish us luck will ya :)

Yay, good for you guys.

He CANNOT be reasoned with, hence the spam and shit, he HAD to be brought down, one way or another.

I don't know the guy.

All that I know about him is what I hear from ZP and other people on the Escapist.

2014?
We've got 4 more years of this crap?
Not soon enough. Someone still needs to sit him down and have a talk with him.

Good thing.

Now he can go live a normal life instead of getting high blood pressure from being all political.
Also, he can stop effecting people with his outdated ideals.

AWESOME.

This is the best news I've heard in a long time. Here's hoping he isn't succeeded by someone who agrees with his ideas.

Some of us are a little worried that he will have a puppet though or someone who shares the same ideals.

Yay, party in the streets.

Anyone else think he may have been blackmailed though? I mean the stuff about his son's soccer game is so clichè.

Edit: Did you see the poll on the side of the news article? 277 people voted they were happy he was leaving, 11 people voted they weren't.

This is a happy day for the gamer community. No offense to him, but seriously, he's been a pain in the ass for gamers for such a long time, and now we have a chance at last.

Well, I wish you Australians good luck with your next guy. I don't know how his politics were in general, but I never heard about him doing bad thing to anyone else other than gamers. I'd hate to see some one else get in his position and screw things up for everyone else except gamers. Not that gamers are unimportant to me, but in the country's and world's affairs, M rated games really aren't a priority in the grand scheme of running a government. Michael was a fucking douche for responding to the public pressure as he did, but from my very limited perspective that didn't mean he was doing crap at his job on the whole.

So he was doing a passable job running the government then?

Not being from Australia, I don't really know what his politics were outside of the (apparently) very anti-adult-game standpoint. Good luck finding someone who isn't terrible and that won't subject your country to things like debt and war.

Atkinson is a state politician not a federal one so there's no chance of that.

The only reason he could veto the implementation of a R18 rating for games was the way the ratings system is set up in Australia requires all the state attorneys-general as well as the federal attorney general to unanimously agree to make any changes to the system.

Other than that, he was a closet right winger with a fetish for secrecy in government and arrogance and bluster in public.

If South Australian government is anything like Queensland government, I don't think his absence will be felt in the wider community. I don't even know the name of my state's Attourney-General. We pretty much know the Premier, and that's about it.
