Atlantis shuttle launch

Did anyone else watch the launch? Anyone get to see it in person? I took a few minutes to watch the stream from NASA's site. It's sad to see the end of the program but who knows what will happen in the next few years! Growing up I always wanted to be an astronaut and still do. Anyone else have any cool stories or memories to share about space /the shuttles?

i didn't watch the launch but i watched it dock with the space station. such a shame. but let hope a new space ship gets made.

*sigh* And we still lack a replacement that has it's coolness factor. Oh sure it's an archaic thing, but hell it was a freakin spaceship. We just have stupid rockets now. Pah.

Yeah really it's not quite sad that they are being retired because that is a part of progress. But the fact they are being retired without any real replacement. What made the shuttles so great was the versitality. They could take a wide variety of cargo and easily take several scientists or vips up along with the crew. It will be interesting to see what virgin galactic and the rest of the private sector do. I'm even contemplating getting a start up business going to easily and cheaply get small cargo in low earth orbit for studies a. nd such

I think it's a massive pity that the programme is over. On one hand, over 8,000 people are going to lose their jobs and on the other, it's the end of an era of exploration into the wider universe. I feel like we are going to miss out on so much.
