So, I just bought a copy of Atlas Shrugged, and only after purchasing it did I find out about the incredibly polarizing reception. I would like to get some more modern, varied opinions on it from a site of agreeable people before I decide to dive into 1,063 pages of small print. What do you think of it? Should I bother reading it? Why or why not do you like/not like it?

It's fairly well written and the plot is at least engaging enough to pull me thorough it. Sure it's long but it's not heavy, I find 1000 pages of Rand much less than say 200 pages of Kafka or Burroughs.

However the big turn off is the philosophy soapboxing which is really, really bad, there's a 70 page long speech at one point, and it's not the only speech. This wouldn't be so bad if the philosophy wasn't intellectually bankrupt and just generally poorly done.

If you're reading it because you want a novel then go ahead, you've already bought it and while there are much better things you could read it's still worth your time. If you're reading it for the philosophy then stop and go buy a proper philosophy book.
