STAY. AWAY. FROM. THIS. GAME.

It makes crazy occult conspiracy theories look like sane and intellectual discourse. There is no saving this story. It should only be played for the lulz.
Wow, Eternal Punishment's story was absolutely awesome, the best JRPG story I've ever experienced, how can Innocent Sin be this bad? I don't think so, maybe you just like things more stright forward and/or excessively plausible. A dark fantasy story set in the modern world is impossible if you don't add a lot of conspiratory theories and "underground" events in the mix, is it? Would you name good stories so I can have a reference about your opinion?
From what I know of Innocent Sin's story, it's like Eternal Punishment's.

Rumors become reality and it's driven by the "fight" between Nyarlatotep and Philemon, but unlike in Eternal Punishment, they lose at the end (mainly because Nyarlatotep kills Maya). The things that come true however are weirder than in Eternal Punishment IIRC.
There's a limit to how far out a story can get, regardless of the premise of "rumors become reality." This is as far past that limit as they could make it.

Innocent Sin spoilers:

Hitler comes back to life and invades Japan to find a superweapon the Mayans (who are aliens) left in Japan.
That's past conspiracy theory. That's past even narcotics. That's just throwing darts at a bunch of random historical words.

Oh, and my favorite game story of all time is Suikoden 3, for those asking.
Suikoden 3
Better than 2 or 5
PFFFFHAHAHA

??????????????
so that's a reason to stay away from a game?
then by your logic no mystery book should be read.
A M Night Shyamalan should never be seen...(you know on second thought his movies after the sixth sense shouldn't be seen)
Also no saving this story, the story in the second game is great (only played eternal punishment) and so is Eternal Punishments rumor system, of course the gameplay could have been changed for Innocent Sin. also the Demons in the game are a wealth of information since they are based on monsters, notable people(of legend), and gods from around the world.
so for the sake of interest what Shin Megami game or Persona game have you played?
I've played most SMT games, and I'm aware of how occult they typically are.

But this one has Hitler out of goddamn nowhere for sheer shock value.

Your move.
ok gimme a while to read a entire translated version of the game script or just a part of it since they tend to be long. ok that is way to long so i will look at notes.

ok from what i can tell a main char from P1 returns and Joker from Eternal punishment is it.

and here the explanation:
The famous German dictator that took power in 1932. When Akinari Kashihara's book is leaked to Maya Amano's publishing company, Hitler and his forces are resurrected by the rumors that result. According to rumor he did not commit suicide in 1945, but was saved by his elite soldiers, the Last Battalion, and he's still alive, waiting to come back to power. He wants to raise Xibalba so that he can create the perfect Dictator-State in Sumaru City. He's also Nyarlathotep in disguise - Nyarlathotep took the form of the evil that people commit in groups, not just an individual Shadow. (http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Adolf_Hitler)

Therefore his resurrection is do to a rumor which if you played Eternal Punishment you will remember the rumor system where rumors become true, thus making Hitler into a very plausible story device for getting the greatest evil villain (in real history since i am pretty sure any videogame villain would top him) without putting the game into world war 2, and since as i mentioned before that the Shin Megami games like to take demons out of various myths and cultures they also like taking people out of real life. (http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Shin_Megami_Tensei_Demons) (this is the list of demons in the games)

you do realize that this is a basic plot device to get Hitler out of world war 2 and into a entire different setting without having some cliche time travel.
also is this really that bad to do this look at the Hellsing Mangas they take the Nazis into the common day and its a great piece of literature to read

It was all Luc. The game gets bonus points for showing up at exactly the right point in my life to be permanently influential. And 2's wasn't THAT great anyway, Luca was just a badass. 5 is way up there too though.

Do you think this is the Persona game that was announced for the 3DS? Thats a shame if it is
No....the ones announced for the 3DS to my knowledge were another Devil Survivor game, another Strange Journey Game, and possibly a remake of Persona 1. I'm certain P2 had nothing to do with the 3DS at all.

Sp this game is due for holiday season in Japan eh? Well I guess NA will be getting it some time in Q1 or 2. I still have to finish P1 and P3, put them down for other games and I'd wanna get through those before this one comes out.

The article is slightly wrong with the story of the game (it is a direct sequal/continuation...kind of, its a spoiler so look it up on your own), still I hope the game is released in the US, albeit I don't really understand why it was never released here in the first place, I don't think the cult resurrecting hitler would've caused much controversy (wolf 3d and bionic commando got by fine), and one of the characters being gay is rather minor (actually both those would probably help, given the other one has actually driven people (myself included honestly) to play it, and hey a gay character who isn't a offensive stereotype, that's some good PR...I guess).

your starting to help it's case, and so what, it's hardly the least controversial thing to have come from the series, for example killing YHWH in shin megami tensei 2 (according to one of the directors or something, it's more a symbolic representation of all gods, then just the Judeo-Christian one, but still your essentially killing God)

Ah yes, the Persona series, I've always thought their catchphrase/slogan should be, "Just when you thought high school couldn't get any worse"
