ok so Deus Ex as we all know did bring about the "moral" issues regarding augmentation...which could be a possibility in the future

on the physical side of things..well I dont see much wrong with it

what I find more of a grey area is your personality, would it be right to alter it? through drugs or augmentations

like what if I were to make myself more social/outgoing? as in enjoy stuff like clubbing and partying and all that? what If I decided I didnt want to be into nerdy things anymore? what if I decided I wanted to liek sports? and fashion? or if you could change your sexuality?

if we were to all augment our personalitys to live up to the Ideal would we be all the same? or would that be a good thing? could you put morals into people?

does this happen today anyway? in certain cases involving drugs?

If they could make a personality augmentation which blocked the spreading or recitation of memes, that would be a great benefit to society. In my dictatorship (coming soon) I'd make everyone install that one.

Aren't we doing this already? Anti-depressents and similar medication can alter a person's personality, make them more placid. As i understand it it's part of the reason people don't want to take them. Moral quandry; if the individual is who they are with their flaws and all (whether they be depressed or highly anxious), is it right to try to alter them with medication? If you remove that depression or that anxiety, you're removing a core component that makes them who they are, for better or worse. Think about that.

I think augmentations, computer chips or drugs to alter your personality would be beneficial, but i think it would only be something i would indulge in temporarily. Say you're going for a job interview or meeting new people, you could 'switch on' the right personality aug for the task, or take a pill that makes you particularly chatty or reserved. I may be a flawed human being, but i am still me. If you can't accept yourself for who you are all the modification in the world isn't going to change that.

Edit: To add on the above point, what about alcohol? Booze can drastically alter an individual from shy to party animal or give them 'dutch courage'. Some people might hit the bottle so they can talk to that girl they like or do or say something they otherwise wouldn't. Same with other forms of drugs, recreational or otherwise. It can change who they really are. While it's nice for that moment, i don't think anyone ever wants to stay that way.

That augment already exists. It's called alcohol.

I'll bring up the Clockwork Orange thing here. Changing someones personality or taking away their wanting to do certain things is a bad thing since thats what defines them.

Really? I believe molding a child´s personality with love and discipline is a crucial part of becoming mature.
That's how children turn into "rebllious" and obnoxious, because people are trying to MOLD THEIR PERSONALITY!
