Or it could encourage companies to make more games that arn't based around how many people you can shoot in the head.

Personally I'm all for this idea as long as an 18+ rating gets introduced.

Reading through that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, until I reached the point where it said that GTA4 is a 15+. that game is an 18 any day of the week, and it speaks more for how the process of rating the games is skewed.

And what if they're selling to 15-18 year olds hmm?

Joking aside I see potential here. The 18+ rating is introduced, the 15+ rating removed, they spend a few years with gamers proving that an 18+ rating does not automatically equal psycho killers and another determined stab at a sensible rating system can be decided.

These things have to be taken one step at a time, and you have to meet the enemy halfway. Because like it or not they have the power, and at least this guy is trying to come to a compromise. Would it be so difficult to compromise, get your 18+ rating, and then continue the campaign once the dust has cleared?

The Australian ratings battle has been going on for a long time now. If it ended, even temporarily, and a new one was put in its place, then the arguments might get more sensible.

Well actually that is not a bad idea. It puts a lot more focus on the parents if kids are still getting these games. Anyway I think it is good that they are trying to meet half way.

At least it's moving forward now.

You know what would really get rid of this issue? Rebranding it as "Parents! The Government wants to decide how you should raise your children!" Suddenly all the moms who absentmindedly buy their twelve-year-olds Call of Duty would be up in arms about their rights and family values. It would be beautifully ironic.

All movies must be Rated-E or hardcore porn. See don't I sound crazy when I do it?

Wow, Australia really needs to get this sorted out, I mean its' one thing to say that GTA or God of War need to be rated 18+ but oblivion, just cause 2, vanquish? these games definitely don't need to be 18's.

On the other hand though if it allows them to finally get to play l4d properly then maybe you just have to take the good with the bad...
In my country Oblivion is still rated M 15+......Funny how in america they made a big fuss.
My thoughts on this are as follows:

It's actually not a bad idea. You just need to teach all the parents that an 18+ rating means it's not for kids...

The way he proposes doing it is profoundly stupid though.
Ooooh, what he said!

Seriously, he took the words right out of my brain.

It's not a terrible idea. I mean just glancing at my game collection I really don't have that many games that are 15+, and pushing those few games up to 18+ wouldn't be too unreasonable.

I don't care whether they throw away the MA15+ rating as long as they reinstate the R18+ rating, cos a lot (and I mean A LOT) of awesome games have the 18+ rating.

Wait, so they're eliminating the 'T' rating in favor of an 'M' rating?

...Australia: This isn't difficult. Not at all.

No, teenagers would have to involve their parents in the purchasing process, which is how it should be anyway.

If GTA4 is an MA15+ game, then clearly Australia doesn't need an R18+ rating. So either the MA15+ rating as it stands is bullshit, or this whole debate about the need for an adult rating it. If we assume the former is true, and the MA15+ rating is basically meaningless, then why not scrap it? Why not say to people, look, this game is for kids, this game isn't, and now you as a parent get to decide what they play. You think your 15-year-old is mature enough to play FEAR 2? Great, buy it for them. You don't? Great, they won't be able to sneak it under the wire thanks to some bogus, borderline rating that says GTA4 is okay but Fallout 3 isn't.

I think it's a fantastic idea. The SCAGs have pretty much said that the entire system is going to be overhauled anyway, so why not take the opportunity to move boldly and make some meaningful changes that are actually good for gamers?

Im with the idea to be honest.

Removes the Blury line what is the 15 rating and says Not for Kids or Are for kids, even misinformed mom's n dads everywhere couldnt fuck it up xD

some people are all like but what about 15 year olds... come on when i was your age we all knew at least 1 shop that could sort us out a 18 rated game, then there is also steam and finally could always ask yer folks.

It is a little funny to me that no matter what some people will cry about all of this. some have cried they dont have an 18 rating, then they cry when one is proposed but another could be abolished.

To be honest that might be a reasonable idea for most country's even Germany could jump on board with that one xD

Please define the term "meant for kids" because I'm pretty damned sure it doesn't mean what they think it means. All games that were rated MA15? Okay, that's most T and M rated games to begin with. I think removing the MA15+ rating is a step in the wrong direction. There should be more distinction between what's meant for 15 year olds and what's meant for 18 years and above. Then again, what do I know? There are little kids that manage to get their hands on downright violent games like Black Ops, and a rating system sure as fuck didn't stop them.

Riiight because 12,13,14,15,16 and 17 year olds dont want to play call of duty at all..... Get real, guys, fast or else the gaming industry may just give up on Australia all together.
