Only a matter of time before they ban the Sims because they don`t have to pay carbon tax on all their goods.
Hmm .. that might be a good idea. Sit all the pollies down with the Sims, and make them play it as a 20-something struggling to make ends meet. Then jack up the rent because baby boomers want more money to retire on; jack up the prices of everything because hippies want everyone to be fiscally responsible for an environemnt raped by 50 years of baby boomer excess; and then every once in a while the rich Sim Bank loses all their savings and says "sorry bad economy; NOW GET BACK TO WORK".

I hate to say it but none of this really matters. The biggest problem is that while probably having plenty of other things to do the Aussie government holds a hearing on banning violent games. Games are entertainment and are just there to bid through time, not to radically change the world and influence people (generally).

When I read that article I knew another AG would take Atkinsons ban them stance. and I dont think the study was seperate but was planned just for this reason of giving an AG some ammo to ban them.

What a surprise. Brendan O'Connor drags his ass to get the R18+ rating in, because he thinks, like any politician: "Why get legislation through now when I can bring it through in 2 years time, which will conveniently line up with the next election?" And then some Attorney-General from one of the states that has gone Coalition decides to try and cement his government's popularity with the save the children brigade by being the lone voice of dissent against an action that will, according to him, raise our children to become murderers. And shitty networks like Seven gladly facilitate his out of context and grossly exaggerated example, because they do it themselves all the time for ratings.

I've Started buying games on Amazon anyway (Because it's cheaper), and i've realised that a game being "refused Classification" isn't such a big deal. As long as antiquated, conservative, and ignorant people like Greg Smith don't get their way, and outright ban games, I'm in no particular rush to see a R18+ rating. It would be nice though....you know, acknowledgement that adults play videogames *Gasp*.

Can you stop sucking up to the right-wing Christian extremists that you all seam to be in the habit of doing. Now I know that you are now old twats and have forgotten what you guys did in the '60's and '70's but trying to stop us from playing games that you deam as "inapropriate" just leads us to pirating.
If we pirate we then play the game un-censored and we get it for free. As a result the people who did the work don't get payed. All because you and some other idiots that you think are the majority (and are really only about 2 or 3%) are all about "SAVING THE CHILDREN."

I agree with him. Murdering prostitutes doesn't serve any real purpose aside from catharsis. Still, there's worse forms of catharsis, like murdering many real prostitutes.
Still, considering that the state's education system is actually causing more problems than it solves I shouldn't be surprised.

Using GTA4 as an example as I go off on a short tangent:
I'll admit that I avoided the GTA games for a while because they seemed to be crap for crap's sake, but when I played GTA4 I realized that there was a great story buried in all of the stuff that the media crucifies games for. I even enjoyed the stuff that the media (and Australian politicians) hate because it gave a bit of freedom to the game. I normally play the "good" path in games, but when games allow any path it makes the path you chose that much more interesting.
Now that doesn't mean I haven't spent hours in GTA4 trying to get as many cars to explode as I can in one wreck, or to try to pick fights between bystanders when they throw a punch at me and hit someone else. I have. I have also run over countless pedestrians because the in-game comments are so funny. (Like I said, I normally play the "good" path... just not those times I played GTA4.)
Yes, I am killing imaginary people with my imaginary car or imaginary gun. But I, like most gamers, can differentiate games from the real world. If you're nuts, you're nuts. A game isn't going to be the difference between insanity and a normal life. I feel sorry for Australian gamers, but it's also good to know that politicians are idiots no matter where you go.
TL;DR: Don't be so lazy... ... ok here it is: Gamers around the world support Australian gamers as their insane politicians try to protect them from fake violence and fake sexuality. (Try protecting everyone from crap reality shows first, then you can swing back and take another look at games, Australia.)
