Xavier Rudd, definately my favourite.

(Howling bells is also alright, seeing as they opened for Coldplay...)

as much as i like AC/Dc i still find that the living end tips them at the post, maybe it's just my age i grew up chanting, Prisoner Of Society, in grade 6 school camps when going up the side of the largest hill in the world (i think, Castle Hill Townsville)

although some AC/dc songs appealed to me, living end pips the post

AC/DC...It's the only one I've heard of.
More likely, the only one you know to be Australian. A lot of our best bands aren't known to be Australian. It's mildly frustrating.

But, because I love you: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_some_famous_Australian_bands

There is a group out of Australia called Portal. They are a Death Metal band which uses a ton of ambient stuff to make their stuff really haunting.

the lead singer wears a clock on his head on stage.

If you like metalcore, then Parkway Drive are a good bet. Also I Killed The Prom Queen, and The Red Shore.

Oh yeah and Carpathian and (I think they're Aussie) Oceana. Mind you, they're a bit heavier than the other suggestions here.

Try Karnivool. They're an alternative rock band, and they are very cool.

Also, Midnight Oil. Just because one of them's now the Australian Environment Minister doesn't mean they're not awesome.

Let's see:

Augie March
Silverchair
Powderfinger
The Screaming Jets
Architecture in Helsinki
Hilltop Hoods
The Angels
The Easybeats

I could go on... WAY on...

Wow Spiderbait are Australian. Huh. You learn something new every day.

Also I can't forget the immortal Men At Work [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNT7uZf7lew]. I think you should make that your national anthem, much better than Advance Australia Fair.
