Australian R18+ Discussion Delayed Again

Plans to discuss the creation of an R18+ videogame rating in Australia have been postponed once again and now aren't scheduled to begin until November.

Australia's pained limp toward an R18+ videogame rating has been absolutely fascinating to watch. For years, the country simply pretended that nobody old enough to drive would have any interest in videogames whatsoever and denied entry to material that the rest of the world took for granted. When the government finally took the radical step of asking the populace what it wanted, and was told on no uncertain terms by tens of thousands of people that what they want are videogames, it declared that the much-ballyhooed consultation process was flawed or imbalanced or otherwise out of whack, and that further analysis and "expert views [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100607-Australian-Government-Slows-R18-Rating-Process]" would be required before any decisions could be made.

That was in May; the next meeting of the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General [http://www.scag.gov.au/], which is responsible for creating "uniform and model laws to reduce jurisdictional difference and create national systems" (which includes updates to the National Classification Scheme) was scheduled to take place in July, when presumably some meaningful action on the matter would finally be taken. However, it is not to be: Because of the recent General Election, the July meeting has been pushed back to November.

The good news for Australian gamers is that an R18+ rating is all but inevitable at this point. The public wants it and evidence that it will bring about the collapse of Australian civilization is non-existent. Even a former opponent of an adult videogame rating, former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie, said it's time for the country to "grow up [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101906-Former-Aussie-Premier-Calls-for-R18-Game-Rating]."

The bad news is that the Australian political machine has shown a remarkable aptitude for dicking around. Maybe 2011 will be your year, Aussies.

The next SCAG meeting is now scheduled to take place on November 4 and 5.

I thought our government was the professional dicking-around squad.

We, the mere apprentice, bow down to the true masters.

Oh boo, the Australian government once again decides not to deal with it yet. I guess in this case it's fair enough, and there's no way they'll actually pass that bill, but I just wish they'd stop putting it off and hurry up with it. It's not really that complicated.

Read Andy's post guys, like he said, it's basically inevitable, Atkinson is no longer in the way, and support isn't going to change.

The Internet filter is my last and only concern at this point, you guys should start reporting on that, well not like there's much to report on anymore, since it's been delayed for 12 months.

Hey Aussies, why not make a big petition or protest about this? Might help.
Petition: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/02/eb-games-collects-46000-voice-for-r18/

Protest: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=276796249249

Done and done, but still no 18+ rating here. It's hard to know if this stuff is even having an impact.

There is no use for petitions or protests anymore. We need a fucking riot.

Hmm nah that won't solve anything. This is still bullshit though.

Riot? No. The sudden death of all anti-game politicians there? Yeah.
Of course the riot is still on I'm "calling it off" so us gamers don't look like violent psychofucks when shit hits the fan and we prove the politicians right.

We did. They ignored us.

The funny thing is, its not illegal to import refused classification material (unless said material is illegal in nature).

With the political turmoil and the general election coming up, I'm actually not all that surprised that they've delayed it.

That said, they had better resolve the issue by the end of the year. Now that Atkinson is out, I think we're pretty much in the clear; now it's just a matter of time.

Wow, that I didn't expect!

All seriousness aside, Australian law is seriously borked in that respect, and I loathe the legislation for not getting to f***ing (pardon my klingon) behinds up and do what they're getting paid for: resolving this jurisdictional mess.

Australian gamers, you have my sympathy. And my sword. And my ax....

...

Well, I thought it was funny! *hmpf*

We're in the middle of a federal election between a nut-job religion fanatic (Abbott) and a ball busting tax crazy cow (Guilard), so we might have things on our minds other then games, not that I don't want an R18+ rating, but honestly, we're kind of busy.

I live in New Zealand, and we have R18 rating for video games. So it's an utter wanker when we get the cut down version because our shipments go through Aus, and if it get's an R18 (Well...you know what I mean there) in Aus, it's not allowed in the country at all.

Luckily, that only happened with GTA4. Other games (Left 4 Dead 2, Silent Hill) have either come directly to NZ, or gone through England instead.

Man, the US government is nothing compared to these guys.

Seriously, I hope this works out for the gamers. They need that rating.

Well they've actually delayed it 'til just before the Victorian election, meaning that they'll delay it again when that comes around. They did the exact same thing before the South Australian election.

Oh goody, another setback -_- I'm once again doubting that we'll ever get an R18 rating.
