As an Australian, this is a huge problem in Australia. Unlike the US, pay-tv is very uncommon (because like everything else it costs heaps, but that's another story) so saying that "It's available on Foxtel, so don't pirate it" isn't exactly a solution.

While personally I'm not a Breaking Bad watcher, there are so many hurdles to jump through to get access to American/British television I can frankly see why so many people turn to piracy.
To be fair though, it's shown on the ABC. Not sure when though or even how late they are aired after the US but it always comes up when I go to watch stuff on iView.

I haven't watched any but I've been meaning to at some stage and this doesn't really surprise me. The amount of time it takes to get South Park over here is pretty bullshit. Season 16 just started airing on SBS (free to view channel) which is a year and a couple of months after the US. To add to that, the DVD is only going to be released in the middle of September :/
Wait, it's on ABC? (Australian Broadcasting Company for anyone else reading) I didn't realise that... but then again I don't watch it.

As a massive South Park fan I also feel your pain. I'm still waiting to see when season 15 comes out in stores, I've been waiting for at least a year.

Whether I've pirated the last few seasons of Breaking Bad/Game of Thrones will remain unsaid because it is a dirty, dirty practice that I'm loathe to even mention.

Inefficient system huh? Is that why our dollar is worth more than America or that that we have the one of the highest standards of living in the world or that the low crime rate? Tell do you actually know anything about us or are you just another person who bases their idea about Australia on the rating system?
Also, I hate to nitpick (not really, but w/e) but... [https://www.google.com.au/search?q=aud+to+usd&oq=aud+to+usd&aqs=chrome.0.0j5j0l2j69i62l2.1609j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8]
To be fair, our government spent a lot of time TRYING to get the AUD below the USD, as it upsets our export market.

How much does Satellite/Netflix/cable TV cost in America? Like, a full package.

Over here in Melbourne it costs roughly...I have no idea, the website is down. A basic package is somewhere between 500-700 a year so...I assume the 'Platinum' package is higher.

Just saying, pay-tv is really tough to maintain here.

*sarcastically waves Australian flag in background while waiting for Breaking Bad to download at terrible terrible Australian internet speeds*
Not only is it expensive as hell, some people just can't get it. If you're renting and the house you're in doesn't have it then it's fairly unlikely that you'd even be allowed to buy it.

Yeah, I think it was on ABC2 around midnight but I'm not sure which night I saw it.

Also, season 15's out already here :p I got it last year I think. JB Hifi is your best option to look for it.

I dont watch the show and im not an australian but wow are HBO being greedy here.

Pay overpriced - ok
Pay overpriced twice - erm?
Subscribe to whole paid network for a single show - are you seriuos?
pirate - oh no we are so evil, we are depriving apple of their 300% profits!

When will the cable companies learn that just because i want this 1 good channel does not mean i want to pay for 30 channels in languages i dont even understand (granted with digital TV set via internet it often comes in 5 languages to your choosing now).

Why Pirate when I can borrow from the library for free.

Sure I have to wait a bit longer, but I've never been that desperate to watch a tv show.
Where do you live that your libraries have modern TV shows?
Libraries here are synonim for book lending. they do have some old public domain stuff sometimes (the largest ones only though) but thats it. you dont even dream about finding a TV show in there or, say, a movie newer than 1970s except some local stuff or "artsy stuff they gave us for free".

Melbourne [Australia] though I'm pretty sure you can get them transferred to most parts of Victoria. Not sure about any other state.

Just check out the Eastern Regional Libraries [http://swft.erlc.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_US/erlc/search/results/?ln=en_US&q=Breaking+bad&rw=0] website.

Note: I don't know if they're completely up to date. I know Game of Thrones and Walking Dead are a season or two behind.

Should also be said, 5 hours after the US is about 4pm, people are at work.

Edited 3pm to 4pm for accuracy.

Frankly, by now it's too late to get all moral about Australian piracy. I would bet, even if pay TV became affordable or a show came out before the US, Australians would still have a high piracy rate. Do all the 'shame on you' that you want, but once something has been so bad for so long you *learn* how to pirate and it just becomes easier to pirate.

There's a culture of piracy here (at least among people I know) and the only real exception to this is typically Steam. A lot of people go to gaming LANs, not to play games but to access their file sharing program and download/upload Terabytes of movies, games and porn. Steam of course being the exception because its the only platform that it's just easier and not terribly expensive to buy on (although I say that only of certain publishers and smaller indie games...)

I'm Australian, and while I'm not saying I do these things, if I were, I would ALWAYS purchase the DVDs or blu rays as soon as they're available. Assuming the show was of a quality worthy of that. Also, you'd be surprised how early access to things that haven't even come out on TV yet can generate excellent word of mouth. You hear about a show, you look into it, if it turns out to be good enough, hey! More DVD sales! Honestly it's a win for the show creators. Look at Orange is the New Black. That show is fucking fantastic, but we don't get Netflix over here, so how the heck are we supposed to watch it? Or even know about it enough to purchase the DVDs? Not many people pay for their TV over here, so if they had to wait for the shows to come to free-to-air (which some of these shows NEVER do), they'd probably never sell anything to us.

This is a very good point actually, and one I can relate to, even though I've never been to Australia. There's a point where you're just so used to piracy, that you don't even think about it. The thought process is kind of like this:

*browses IMDb*
Hmm... I wanna watch this movie.
*goes to TORRENT SITE*

This is specially true if it's some small/unknown/foreign movie, though in some cases, I was able to find them on Youtube of all places. (is piracy less bad if it's on YouTube?)

I can honestly say that there are a few groups (or whatever you call them, I don't know) that I actually trust, because.... I like their service, imagine that. I see it's a rip by that guy and I think "Awesome, I'm getting this one."

here's the thing about Australian Pirates... we as a culture consume ci;ltural works and TV is one... most Aus Pirates either already pay for foxtel (in which case they feel they have already paid for the product) or they support the show through consumption of the merchandising. If you really wanted out money you would offer a low cost streaming service and organise for it to be unmetered... as it is all Australian data plans have caps (including those that claim to be unlimited).

Sorry wut?

Breaking Bad airs in the US at 9pm/8 central Sunday night, which is 11am Monday morning here, 5 hours later would be 4pm. I don't know where you got 10am in America from.

Yep, we have Foxtel, but you have to get the entertainment package for Showcase, which is around $75 a month (inc. Basic), but what we really lack is On Demand services. I don't use iTunes and if I had Foxtel, I don't want to wait around until they decide for it to be aired.

I get you now, my mistake, I thought you were saying it airs in the US at 10am, so we shouldn't have any issues with it being in work hours as it is aired in work hours in the US.
