Am I the only person who doesn't look at an avatar until after I read their post?
Yes. Yes you are (not really though).

OT: I recognise people by their avatars, then their names. I just have to hope that I can learn their names before they swap their avatars, but becaue I recognise avatars, if someone has an avatar that someone I recognise has then I tend to view their post in a similar light to the way I view the other person.

That was rude and uncalled for. I was trying to make a point and defend the injustice that has transpired in this thread. I sit here and base my opinion of others in relation to their words and manner of speaking; not their avatar, whatever that may be. The fact of the matter is, I enjoy the variety of avatars on the Escapist. The pony avatars only add to that. It gives everybody a sense of individuality.

I think you quoted the wrong person. Regardless, if you're going to accuse me of being butthurt accuse me of being butthurt about the correct thing. I don't care that people don't like what I like; I care that they are using what I like to devalue my opinion.

I have a bias towards certain anime (Black Butler and Trinity Blood, mostly) but my personal favorites are anything steampunk (like mine.)

I have some bias for MLP FIM avatars. Because lets face it, that show is awesome. (In my opinion anyway.)

I would have to say that pony avatars get on my nerves if only because there's at least 10 pony avatars per thread (No,I'm not hating on the show, what people watch is their business) Other than that, not many avatars grate me much.

I know, the last one of those I got involved some kind of greek symbol... where the hell is that on the keyboard?!

As for the topic: I hate when someone's avatar has writing that due to being avatar-sized is no longer readable, NO ONE GETS THE JOKE BUT YOU!
aww and here i thought i'd be free of discrimination here! *sadface*

i dont tend to have any judgements about peoples avatars... i like some... and i think some people are weird for liking others enough to use as their face to the escapist community...

and as to the my little pony thing... people like spongebob, people like futurama, people like family guy, whether it became a "meme" or not, people like what they like and rarely have i seen that impact who they are.

then again i seem to be a member of that rare section of the internet where very little makes me mad enough to say anything about anyone SPECIFIC.

at the end of the longest line, that's where i will always be...

I assume anyone with a pony avatar is awesome unless proven otherwise.

EDIT: Except that one person with a disturbingly sexual Rainbow Dash avatar. Yeah, you. You know who you are.

No, I've read enough perfectly intelligent posts by people with all sorts of avatars and screen names to care. It would be a little shallow to disregard someone's opinion based on appearance. Avatars look more like reaction faces to me, anyway. I've even changed my avatar based on a post I was making and kept it that way for months because I didn't care to change it. Screen names are what I follow mostly, and seeing the same avatar time and time again gets boring.

Although, I remember DementedTeddy used to have some really good avatars before she was banned.

I'm mainly just not a big fan of any animated avatars. Especially when that person writes a really long post. So I'm stuck with this little moving/blinking/whatever thingy while I'm just trying to read what they posted.

I admit I think that the pony thing is a little out of hand here, I still don't see the big fuss, but I don't exactly have anything against the avatars themselves. Some of them are pretty stupid imo, but that's the fault of the individual image, not the source material itself.

It's a good show, we all like it, there's not much else to it. Same reason people have avatars of different anime characters, because they like anime.

OT: I don't have much of a bias. I tend to notice people with pony avatars or weird looping animated avatars, so I'm more prone to recognize them later. So you might call that a bias. But I don't have a negative bias against any avatar, really.

Do you find that you have a bias towards or against a particular type of avatar?
My Little Pony avatars. Every time I see one I think "Oh great, I sure hope this pony fan isn't here to derail this thread."

I don't care about the actual show or think less of them for watching it. It's just that so many of the fans think it's the only thing anyone should talk about, and throw down a pony discussion wherever they can regardless of if it's relevant.

Having yourself or a meme (MLP does not count) is kinda weird to me.

I don't mind any of them except people who have yet to set one, it's one of the first things I do on a new account, add some form of picture if I can.

Accounts are harder to recognise in a sea of the same stock photo.

As for the pony ones, I don't mind at all since I enjoy the show greatly but the fact SO many people have them like it's suddenly the only thing they are about, as if it's life defining is kind of annoying, analogous to when gay people like to make it very clear that they are gay despite me not caring either way.

I don't think so. I do like ones that I find clever or amusing though. Seeing the same ones again and again doesn't really happen much here, but I do like it when people are original with them.

Of course, I say this with my pre chosen avatar from the selection here on the Escapist, but I've had it since day one, and people sort of recognize me by it now.

That, and I've had a few people tell me that they imagine Mustang saying some of the things that I type, and that amuses me.

...Sometimes, I'm easily amused. XD

Julianking93?
Haha, now it's turned into a guessing game. Yes, Julianking93 is the avatar I was talking about. I hasten to add that the person himself is fine and writes some interesting things. I have nothing at all against him. It's just that I used to have a girlfriend who would occasionally act like a cat, holding up her hand like a paw and meowing. Over and over, and over. It was cute for about ten seconds, then it became annoying as hell. Julianking93's avatar has the exact same feeling to it.

BTW, Steppin Razor, yours strangely does not bother me at all, I think it's kinda cute actually.

I can't say I'm really biased against anyone based on their avatars.

Occasionally, though, I'll be more likely to read/quote a person if I like their avatar. If it's a game I like, or an anime or TV show I watch, or just something that amuses/amazes me... they'll probably get quoted. And complimented on their avatar.

...I hate to think someone would be biased against me because of the 75x75 gif of a hula-hooping Sengoku Basara character that I've chosen as an avatar. But who knows.

I was going to post a topic like this but I decided not to and I don't like some of the responses some Escapists are giving, some people are acting a little bit shallow, or maybe I'm just extremely naive...

OT: No I have no biased to any type of avatar though there are some avatars that jump out to me more than others.
