Avatar was good. The only really unrealistic thing in the movie as far as physics was the floating rocks, but those made for some sick action scenes and really cool images, so it was forgivable. What's the problem? The movie was artistic, and there's nothing wrong with a biochemical presence influencing a religious view. Just because they made a more realistic image of alien culture being far different from our own, as well as decent evolutionary characteristics on Pandora, doesn't mean that it is bad. They just have a different religious belief, so settle down, they aren't hippie trash. Just because movies incorporate territorial connection and loyalty to one's nation to the point of death quite frequently doesn't mean that it shouldn't be used, because that happens, and you can't just exclude such a thing just because it is used a lot. What if William Wallace (real or Mel Gibson) had realized that people as far back as the Sumerians, and possibly beyond that, had used nationalism and loyalty as a basis for defending their homes zealously and decided not to fight Edward because it was not original, well then there would have been no Scottish Wars of Independence, and I'm not going to go into detail but that would have changed a lot of history, and so it shouldn't be removed from movies because it seems cliché.

We're all entitled to our opinions. I for one thought it was a magnificent retelling of a classic story in a breathtaking world. It was completely worth the 9 dollars I spent on it last night, and was a grand epic romp.

my reaction and response to it was... pretty much the same way I reacted to Uncharted 2.

Youve seen it done before... but it was done so well that I can't really knock it too much. And James Cameron is known for doing things to well, even if not entirely original. A lot of plot directions in his movies are predictable... but do you really care?

I totally called that the Queen would be on the ship at the end of Aliens... and I was right. But even if it was predictable... good god thats one of the best scenes in cinema history!
"get away from her you *****!"

I guess the point I want to make is that it does itself so well- even if I have seen the story before. Once again, happily, James Cameron impresses me does not disappoint

FERNGULLY.... in SPAAAAAAAACE.

Honestly, considering the minuscule number of movies I see in theatres (and generally), I think I might drop the cash to go see it, regardless of depth of plot, how good the CGI is, or the overall repetitiousness of the message.

It's pretty good I thought, although of course not quite up to the hype (but when is anything up to its hype??)

Yes I admit the political messages were thinly-veiled (if not not at all), but it's still kinda cool.

Uses 3D pretty well too

It was a rare lifetime experience for me. I have never seen or even imagined such a deeply immersive and impressive film with so many layers of detail. The story was not totally original, but it was convincing and well told in my opinion. Of course, there will always be people who like to flame things. I'm sure that when Star Wars first opened, there were also people going "UHHHHHH ALIANS AND STUFF, THEY JUS COPYIN INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, DUUUUHH." Such is life.

I think we have arrived at the core of the issue, in two parts.

Part the first: It seems the film is being likened to a mix between 'Ferngully: The Last Rainforest' and 'Pocahontas'. Due to the significant amount of CGI 3D actiony content, I imagine the core demographic is going to see the marriage of these two films as a critical mistake. Plus, it is difficult to listen to people for whom I have a modicum of respect praise the film as an amalgamtion of the two films.

Part the second: It seems the dialogue leaves the audience wanting. The real tragedy is that we accept poor dialogue/writing in action films. Any movie watcher that "just wants cinematic fluff" should understand that the destruction of a chance for modern culture is directly influenced by the ignorance, coupled with the satisfaction derived from minimal brain function.

Go see Up in the Air.

So, it looks safe to say this is officially the next movie all the clever people hate.
Quoted for truth many times over. People, give the damn movie a chance before you condemn it to failure, ok? Yes, it's long, but James Cameron knows how to make a good movie, and I'm sure you won't be bored out of your skull at any point. The story is somewhat unoriginal, but the method is fantastic (so I hear) and it's worth seeing just for the fantastic finish. (again, apparently, as I have not seen it) If I didn't have more than a foot of snow outside my house, I would go to see it today.

I dunno. Pocahantus crossed with Fern Gully, made into a sci-fi epic was kinda odd and cliched.
On the other hand, it was just amazingly well done, interesting, and fun.
And I was one of 8 people in the theater, so that's a plus. ;-)
And, because of the clicheness, I knew what was going to happen after the first 20-30 minutes.
But still, it was just fun.

Well while I'm going to withhold judgment until I actually see it, I must say that the basic premise of 'EVIL Technology Users' VS 'Organic Hippie Native Culture' already doesn't place it off to a good start in my mind.

If I want to be preached at while watching a movie I'd go watch a Michale Moore flick.

P.S. I fucking hated Ferngully.
I cant say I agree with you analysis... It seems more like "Evil Corporation" VS "Foreign Natives", and who doesnt hate "Evil Corporations"? The Evil part really gives their intentions away... :D

So you're saying it was exactly like I thought it would be. Great. It's always nice to hear you were right.

Meh, I kinda liked it. It was certainly entertaining, and the time passed pretty quickly, which means I enjoyed it :)

Also, the guy has a knife fight with a fucking robot man! How is that not cool?!

wow, you are so intuitive and perceptive. You complain about the movie being a "heard it all before" story, well give a review that I haven't heard before.

It sounds like it's basically modern American steroptypes versus stereotyped Native Americans, IN SPACE, doesn't it?
Yeah, yeah it does.

Reading more about it online not only does the crazy IN SPACE environmental message take center stage, but so does rampant commentary and allegory on the War on Terror!

Because god know we don't get enough of those from every other Hollywood writer who thinks they're a lot more clever than they really are!

I don't know, this movie is going to have to fucking AMAZING to overcome the above for me.
You seem like a very angry person.

Anyways, the movie was pretty good. The plot didn't drag along at all throughout the movie. CGI was pretty and the characters were nicely developed. I don't see why everyone hates it so much.

Basically it is "the last samurai" set in space.
man travels somewhere exotic to fight the native people
man infiltrates native society
man learns to like native society
man loves native women
man turns on his own people

A few small differences but it has the same basic set up. This set up is also used in a few western film's as well

On the other hand i did really like the film. it was certainly nothing new and the special effects were not as good as they said they would be, but the film was still enjoyable

Old enough to have seen lots of shitty movies, and that was not one of them. Also, old enough to know what to expect from each genre and director and not flame on just because Jesus did not descend from the Heavens after the movie to absolve me from my sins :)
