I dont know about you, but when i feel like changing my avatar, i sometimes have a hard time looking for somthing that screams "Awesome" For me, so heres what im thinking, post that your looking for a new avatar, give me (Or us if people are willing to help me out) some ideas about what your looking for, and I (Us) will come up with a list for you to chose from if you like them.

Also: I think this has been done before, but I haven't looked into it too much.
