Actually, I don't think is has anything to do so much with naming rights, so much as wanting Korra to be a separate story, not just a sequel series. It isn't continuing Aangs story so much as building off of it as a firm foundation, while the creators push their limits a little and work with something they're comfortable with now.

The name brands it as its own thing, even if its set in the same universe. Though, if it WAS due to naming rights, I'll admit, that would seem pretty stupid, though the 'We had it first!', argument doesn't always work.

They still refer to Korra as "The Avatar". So not a huge deal that it's not in the title.

The new show looks interesting, I do hope the villains get more interesting than the anti-bending separatists. And I do hope the 100 years war still carries some cultural influence. Racism and nationalism wouldn't be absent in a world like that.

Well, Amon looks like he could easily get interesting.

Spoiler: speculation

For the "watch next week's episode" bit at the end of the second episode, they said that there would be some kind of reveal about Amon, something that shocked Korra. Given her back story and the lack of build up (since it's the first few episodes), my friends and I think that we probably already know him in some way; the thing that made the most sense to us was that he is Azula's son. Considering how we left Ozai at the end of the last series, that may explain his motives.

More fun theory: Sokka hit his head, and now he is Wang Fire, the badass normal in the world of Benders. But that can't do, Wang Fire can't be anything less than the best, so he set out to knock his rivals down a peg. That's why Katara said he was "gone". She did not become Sapphire Fire, so he is dead to her.

I was watching the legend of Kora, and I started wondering why the hell couldn't it be Avatar: the Legend of Kora, then I remember reading something about the James C. Film being a reason, and this had me wondering why the hell would that matter

Avatar: the last airbender (Cartoon) came out first, then it was the JC movie, then the Shamalon Film, then this new cartoon, My limited understanding of law says that there shouldn't be a problem,

So does anyone know why the show isn't called Avatar Legend of Kora?

The long title is still Avatar: The Legend of Korra. Just like for The Last Airbender. Towards the end of The Last Airbender they referred to it without the Avatar part. I also think that this time around its not really about being the Avatar and more just learning about what the world has become because she has already mastered 3 of the elements unlike Aang who only had one down at the beginning. Which is also the only Element Korra doesn't know yet.

Am I the only one who entered this thread thinking that this would be a game where a poster would describe how their avatar would beat the avatar of the poster above them in a fight? I was totally psyched to describe how Jedi Connor MacLeod would decapitate the avatar of the guy above me.

But Scythian, that makes me scratch my head even more, How could Cameron even name it avatar with out issues? then they turn around and tell nick ((Who had the name first )) they can't use it on their sequel?

Because Nickelodeon doesn't have Titanic, Aliens, or Terminator 2 money.

I think JC didn't 'tell' them to do anything, Nick just decided to pick its battles.

^^^This, this pretty much sums up the entire entire question. Nick would be right in saying "You know what? We'll just let this one go."

Even though the precedent set by the World Wildlife Foundation getting the WWF to change to WWE would lead you to believe it SHOULD be first-come-first-serve.

There's also the chance that JC straight up bought the rights to the title Avatar from Nick, but more likely he just threatened to sick Arnold Schwarzenegger, Leonardo Dicaprio, and a pissed-off Xenomorph on Nick if they tried to start some shit.
