The now revealed sphinx laughed again at the nervous students.

"Oh come now." She waved a large paw in an almost human gesture of dismissal. "That whole 'guard the path' thing is very old hat. Neolithic really. No proper work for a modern lady."

As Hataki passed close the sphinx raised her eyebrows for a moment then nodded in a friendly gesture. She then looked back at the other students.

"Of course I could provide a few riddles if you wanted to make a little wager. That's quite allowed. But really I was wondering if you knew anything about Ron." She continued to lounge and smile at the students.

"Who? I don't know a 'Ron', though I'd be happy to make a wager, I guess that if I fail then I die and if I win then I get your precious?"

So far I've referenced Pyramids by Terry Pratchett and The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein. Yay!

"Pleasure to meet you ummm... Ma'am? but i am far from a "young lady" as you would think" Hataki said making an emphasis on young lady.

she then stopped and faced the sphinx. "Might i ask you, Is a young lady passed around like a cursed item in a family? does a young lady have a sensitivity to light to the point where it burns her eyes in direct sunlight? Does a young lady have mental issues? Does a young lady carry a sword around to protect herself because no one in her family, save for her old uncle who can barely walk now, cares about her? Does a young lady have uncontrollable electricity moving about her body and is unable to make a simple handshake but to those with false limbs!?" Hataki said passionately, you could hear her troubles in her voice.

she then looked down at her hand, sparks jumping around it nearly engulfing it. Take a few deep breathes and calm down. she thought. the sparks on her hand subsided to small flashes barely noticeable.

Tasha gasped. [sub]"A sphinx... C...can I have your autograph?"[/sub] He was clearly getting excited about the prospect of meeting someone like her and he grabbed out a piece of paper and a pen.

"Hataki," David placed himself in front of her. "It would be better if you don't antagonize her, after all. She was just trying to be polite." David turned to the sphinx and made a bow. "Pardon my friend Ms. Sphinx. She's just a bit... Delirious from the sun." David faced his head towards Hataki and made a forced smile. "Aren't you?"

"I'm sensitive to it and i've had a rough life. My mental state isn't the best and i think i just snapped." Hataki said "I guess you're wise and old, i respect you for that. but certain things can set me off." she said putting a hand against her head. "I need to sit down for a bit, also can someone flip the guide bot so it doesn't get away?" and she sat down, putting her sheathed sword on her lap.

Tasha looked up briefly and snagged the Guidebot and pulled it down on its back [sub]"Like this?"[/sub]

It's my Dad's B-day so I'm going off to celebrate with him. I won't be back until later.

"It should do." David nodded. The little Guidebot was beeping and whirring in indignation, being unable to perform it's function. David snickered at this. "The little guy doesn't seem to be too happy."
@Vesuvius Alright, have fun man. See you later.

The sphinx regarded Hataki but didn't have her smile as she did. Her face was grim, almost sad, as she looked deep into Hataki's eyes. Speaking softly so that the others couldn't hear she said, "No person is merely a 'young lady'. While it is one thing that you are, and make no mistake of that, it is only one thing of many. They all make up who you are; all you have to do is find out who you are."

With that she stretched a bit and got back up. Now standing much taller then the students she cast a shadow on the still nearby Hataki. Smiling again she continued at her normal voice. "That was a free one. And I would advise you never to call a lady old again." The final words contained a hint of a growl.

Looking back at the others she spoke to them. "Well I should hope that I'd never be compared to a dirty little mountain dweller again but... Well the traditional game is still allowed. Answer my riddle and earn a service. Fail and I'm afraid I'll simply have to eat you."

She thought for a moment. "Not that I'll enjoy it, I promise. Humans are really quite stringy you know. But do please consider carefully, there's no backing out once you accept." Through the entire explanation her voice stayed friendly and cheerful despite the messy subject. "I'd hate to ruin my new blouse with all the blood."

standing back up and regaining herself, Hataki started to speak. "I'm sorry if i offended you but i meant it as a sign of respect. i shall decline the wager, but i'm not sure about my highly intelligent companions though. if they do accept the wager and fail i shall defend them. most ironic if you look at it though, the princess coming to save the prince in distress. wouldn't you agree?" she then put her sword back at her waist and rested her hands on the back of her head.

"Well," David scratched at his nose sheepishly. "It'd be a refreshing change from the usual cliche." David reached into his bag and pulled out his dagger. "But I'm capable of defending myself if I have too." He placed the dagger back in the bag. "Ms. Sphinx, may I ask you a question?"

Tasha grimaced [sub]"I just want an autograph... However if push must come to shove I will defend my underclassmen."[/sub] His fist clenched.

The sphinx simply nodded at Hataki. "Quite all right dear. Life can be a very confusing thing." Strangely she made no response to the comment about if one of the others failed.

Looking back at David she gave another of her melodic laughs. "Please. Mrs. Sphinx was my great great great grandmother, call me Lola. I insist. And I think a polite lad like you could certainly have a question or two. On the other hand I must answer in my own way." She winked as if sharing a little in joke. "After all, there's a reputation for mystery that I have to do my part in maintaining."

"Getting up in arms isn't the best idea. I shall get ticked off. The last time that happened i blacked out and wound up with me and two others in a hospital. I don't feel like burdening my family with more health bills, thank you very much." Hataki said taking some more breaths attempting to control her energy.

"Alright, Ms.Lola," David chuckled. "Should we pass your riddle, what do you have to offer us?"
David highly doubted that she'd even answer that, but he decided to go for it anyway.

"Yes, 'cause I want to know if the reward of winning, coupled with the chance of winning, will outweigh the chance of losing and the loss when losing."

"What sort of reward? Well A gift or service is quite traditional." Lola considered. "Though answering a question is also quite often an option. Of course, the power that I have is not inconsiderable to achieve the ends desired."

Her gaze seemed to wander up a bit and Jack would quickly realize that she was staring right at the third eye, though she gave no outward indication of it. "Usually a long service never lasts for more then a year and a day." She continued as if nothing was amiss. "Powerful forces rule contracts like these after all."

"Okay, I'll take up your wager. Though I'll define a riddle as being something that Gollum wouldn't complain about being asked."

After weighing the risks and benefits, John decided. "Alright, let's hear the riddle."
