Avoiding Social Awkwardness

So earlier today I got lunch at a bakery, to pay by card I had to get some money out at the same time, it wasn't until I'd finished and left walking down the street that I realised that the girl hadn't actually given me my $20. I actually almost didn't go back because I didn't want to have to explain the situation and hope they believed me. I did get the $20 it just made me think much I seriously go out of the way to avoid socially awkward situations.

So my question is what sort of stuff have you done just to avoid a moment of awkwardness?

I don't care about social awkwardness... it's effort that dictates my reactions to situations.

Earlier today I was getting ready for a lunch-date with my boyfriend, when my roommate came in. Just before she went in I planned on putting on some fragrant hand-lotion, then put a on liberal coating of body spray of the same scent. BUT, I wasn't sure if she liked the smell, and I was worried she'd think I was WAAAAAY overdoing it, so I walked 50 feet down the hall to the bathroom just so I could spray myself down.

BUT so that it wouldn't look like that's the only thing I was doing, I also brought my water bottle and a vitamin so I could act like I was going down to the drinking fountain to get some water.

...But then I ended up forgetting my key to get into the bathroom, so I just went ahead and got the water, went to the room, and sprayed the body spray. She didn't say anything about it, and I feel like an idiot.

Man I wish I knew how to avoid socially awkward situations, I mean all my attempts at conversations always end up becoming ridiculously long awkward silences, I have no clue how to avoid it, it just happens every time, and then people start to look at me weird.
