I don't want to use voice chat because hearing other gamers talk hurts my soul. I'm sure I'm just as annoying when I talk about games but that doesn't mean I want to hear other nerds. What is everyone's opinion on the best way to avoid voice chat without getting bugged about it.

So far my best story is telling people I'm deaf, and recently I've gone as far as to make up a fictional childhood accident that explains it. Not only do people stop asking and I think they are more deferential to noobishness because apparently it isn't politically correct to criticize a deaf guy. Does anyone else have a better idea?

I hate other players talking in a match, it's just so annoying, especially when they take the game "super seriously"

well, I have a mute friend, I suppose that works.
just send a text message saying you're a mute. (Not to be confused with Mutie or Mutant)

Hell, I almost never use game chat anymore. I usually play online with friends and in party chat only.

I should have been more specific, this is for pc gaming, specifically mmos, more specifically DnD Online. Console voice chat is so exceedingly stupid that I couldn't imagine anyone actually using it for any reason.

I remember one guy started yammering on about how I was from Australia, and how I liked kangaroos and was a "Zebratologist". Then whenever I would try to say something to one of my friends, he would yell "ZEBRA ZEBRA KANGAROO ZEBRA" at me.

Can anyone please tell me what on earth "Zebratology" is?

The best thing to do is to join in voice chat and take the piss out of anyone at any possible occasion. That way, you have more fun!

For example:

Guy: "OMG! i shot 2 guys at the same time with a sniper blah blah no scope etc etc"
You: "Do you know what the best thing about that kill was?"
Guy: "err... yeah?"
You: "No one gives a ****"

Another example:

Guy: *Randomly singing some crappy song*
You: "Ya know, i don't think you'll win X Factor/American Idol this year"

Say everything in nice friendly tones. Expect abuse and laugh when abuse does get thrown at you. Because abuse is funny.

Personally, I avoid voice chat just because it's not that great for immersion. By and large, voice chat is just a bunch of typical teens or early 20-somethings. Unless I happen to be playing a game about people of that age group in a contemporary setting, it doesn't click.

I can take anything except the high-pitched voice of a nine-year old saying, "Hey, does anyone have a mike?" over and over

I have a friend whose boyfriend is mute due to a surgical accident that severed his vocal cords. I suppose if you get tired of telling them you're deaf, you could always go with that.

I don't like voice chat either. I just tell people I don't have a mic though.

Take the mic out.
Saying stuff like "I'm deaf is stupid, how can you hear they're talking to you, why would you be playing video games, half the experience is what you hear.

I think games need to start doing what Halo 3 did and make playlists for MLG rules. Because we have people who just play the game for fun and don't really care about working together as a team or anything, then we have people that actually want to play the game and take it as serious competition. Forcing these types of people to play together is like making NFL teams play with jr. highers.

If you want to play with a team, use a mic. It's that simple.

Well, you can do it the mature way and either mute people or remove your mic, or you can stay in a permanent party chat. Or, you can do it the immature way and yell gibberish/obsenities/random words in the highest pitch of voice you possibly can when others are being annoying.

Don't wear a mic and set chat to friends only. Then you can't hear anyone that you don't want to (most people).
