So, to you, what game (or games) caught your attention with an awesome premise, a story or world that seemed perfect in your mind, only to blow it completely when it came to, you know... being a game?

Homefront. The original idea was brilliant, even the book was great. But when it came down to it, it became another "I have unlimited ammo" game. The premise was that it was a very undersupplied resistance that was fighting against a massive force. But there was no challenge, you never got below 300 bullet, and it just ended up being a mess in terms of story. I was hoping for a true underdog story that included many defeats, but some strikes that would hurt the forces, instead of a 1 man army game.

Dead island has moved into this thread, and is eating all of its food using all of its toilet paper, without paying any rent or utility bills.

Bioshock, I really wanted to like that game and the atmosphere was great for about the first 15 mins. But the design just got so bad that I could not even finish it.

Dragon rage for the ps2 a premise that is almost my dream game but has controls that are uber shitacular and a crazy hard difficulty

Thank you. It's not even nearly as well written as anyone supposes it to be, it just has a really great villain.

The first Assassin's Creed game.

Then again, I'm not very good at that sort of game, so it could be just me. But I didn't like the combat one bit.

Yep, the writing is terrible, the atmosphere quickly falls apart, the level design is boring and repetitive, the mini-games are dumb(I hope who ever though they where a good idea got fired), and the choice is nearly meaningless. I'm sure its all deep and awesome if you're used to games with the complexity of your average shooter, but for the rest of us its bland and uninspired.

Too Human, how could anyone make a techno viking game set in an authoritarian/ruined future as you struggle against a killer robot army suck?

I don't know but they damn well did.

I'll chuck in the obligatory Mirror's Edge and Alpha Protocol references here.

Great ideas, so very nearly great games.

Snip.
Exactly. It played like Baby's First Art Game to me. The game satirizes you for doing not only what it gives you no other choice but to do (and I'm just talking about killing Splicers here), but also for doing what I in my independent judgement would call a good thing (releasing those freak shows from their suffering.)

Compare that to an entire series like Metal Gear where Liquid Snake can say "You enjoy all the killing!" And there's more shades of grey to it: the game is much easier if you kill. (Not so in BS, I'd actually argue it, like other Western games, is easier with good karma.) Aside from MGS3 (and even that has The Sorrow), killing people in those games is not funny. You shoot a dude and their blood and brains flow out of their head as they reach forward and scream. It's horrifying, and it makes you feel like shit. That's not even considering the situation where you've got hold-ups or knocked-out soldiers. They're totally at your mercy, but killing them would still make your game a little bit easier. So here you are a minute later and there's a dude who died face in the dirt because you held him up, took his shit, and never gave him a second chance. There's artistry in that.

I guess Skyrim was like that to me. I played it for awhile but it quickly became repetitive so to enjoy it still, I stopped playing it for so long. Unfortunately that didn't work and there is nothing in the game that interests me any more.

Oh good, it isn't just me then. Also, something about the game play I didn't like either.
