i would love for WoW to be more dark. it would make it more realistic (as far as fantasy goes). Now, its a great game, but i think that the cartoonish graphics hold it back a bit from being completely immersive.

Amazing how they figured this out about WoW but not Diablo 3 (instead of changing it into WoW style, keep the dark Gothic presentation like the other two games.)
Oh please. Let's not beat this dead horse again. Diablo 3 looks just as dark and gothic as D2 did, at least in action.
I respectfully disagree. Does this look Gothic to you?

(LULZ!)
That picture was made on purpose to make fun of people that complain about D3 art direction. D3 is the same thing. It just has more colours, the same exact colours that were present in D2, but could not be achieved due to the graphic engine. With a more powerfull engine it's possible to squeeze much more colour make them vibrant and alive. Just cause it's about the end of the world and demons doesn't mean you need to be in graveyard mood all the time, and have a handfull of colour spectrums.
.....Yeah dude I understand the picture was made on purpose and as a joke.

I can clearly remember the time when I had heard and read about WoW but hadn't seen even a single screenshot. It was before I won a key to the beta of course.

It was my first mmorpg too (I don't think Diablo 2 counts as a mmorpg at all) and the way I imagined WoW to be, let's just say if I could project those images into your head, which I cannot with mere words, your experience would range from mouth-watering to orgasmic.
Of course this fantasy was more immersive than any monitor can be because of it's perspective.

Btw, my fantasy WoW was dark and non-comic like but had vibrant colours, so yeah I like the new Diablo 3 style even as a diehard Diablo1+2 fan. I'd choose vibrancy over mud any day.
Have you been in the Louvre? Seeing so many paintings from such a broad period of time, you see that not everyone had access to the same colours and the higher the palette is, the better the artist can create a painting with higher contrast and the higher the contrast between the lightest spot and the darkest spot in a painting, generally the more it is liked since in comparison, a painting with less contrast looks like seen through dark muddy glass.

Nobody complained about Warcraft 3's graphical style, so why did they even consider changing it? Plus, the somewhat cartoonish style makes them stand out too.

I read this as:

"Really, we can't do dark things very well. We tried it with Diablo 3, we tried it with WoW... we just suck at it!"

Because they said the exact same thing about D3 as well.

Eh, WC3 is about as cartoony as C&C Generals. It's not the art style that was cartoony and happy, it was the limits of the technology that made 3D RTS games look cartoony at that time.

That would be like calling WC1 and 2 cartoony. No, they're not cartoony. They're EVGA graphics.

I always thought WCIII was a radical departure from the tone of the first two games, which were frequently extremely dark, like StarCraft. I liked it, but it was very bright and cheery.

The limits on 3d tech at the time may have had something to do with it but the choice of going for the vibrant colours was all blizzards. As for them not doing dark well, who wants another dark/brown/gray game where you can't see jack as it all merges into the walls/floors.

I'll take stylised and memorable any day over brown and forgettable.

Hmm, I've heard rumors that Blizzard might be doing a graphics update, but I doubt it. Even so I wouldn't mind seeing some parts of Azeroth a bit more sinister.

i've never had an issue with diablo 3, i think people just whine way too much about stuff

i think a darker WOW wouldn't have been as good or caught on as much. i do think the fanboys would complain lots and lots if they had made it darker

I've just realised the delicious hypocracy of the situation. Gamers constantly ***** about all main stream games being too gray and brown. Then D3 comes along and everyone whines "Give us more brown and gray, we hate colours!". Heh.

Its the same colour pallete but the engine can make them more vibrant
Wait... what?
Same pallete, more shades.

I think WoW does well looking the way it does. Going with a distinct style might put people off, the cartoonish feel makes it longer lasting and gives it a mass appeal.

I've never played but always thought it looked great and wanted too.

Of course, cartoony doesn't necessarily equal cheery. The early screenshot of Lakeshire, Plaguewood, Stratholme, Blackrock Spire and Icecrown architecture show how to keep it gloomy and cartoony at the same time.

But the problem with dark (and this was re-iterated by Blizzard in the Diablo 3 color scheme discussions) is that you can't see anything, and that's obviously bad for playability. Nights are rarely pitch-black in movies for the same reason as well.

Hmmm that is interesting because i know many people who are turned off of WOW because its graphics appeared to cartoony. Maybe if they waited it may have been more popular, but then again maybe not.
Yes but by making cartoony graphics they also brought in a lot of people and help to make it fun for a larger variety and the "casuals".

The round and cartoony graphics of WC3 is the main reason why I never got into it. WC2 was awesome, WC3 was awful. Not that I would've played a MMORPG otherwise, but making WoW in WC3-style really didn't help it in my eyes.

Maybe Blizzard should start making their cutscenes less gritty and dark to match the tone of their gameplay graphics.

They've been slowly changing the art feel away from the cut and dry cartoon style, and it's still working. It's like they're finding a decent medium as they have to explore new areas and shuffle their art palettes.
Back in the day, the only thing that was more hilarious than Ogre Butt was the rogue having to do it from behind. They changed that and I think it made the game both more acceptable, but far less light-hearted.
