What about a classic? Age of Empires 2.

Sure, the graphics are a little old, but the gameplay is simple enough to understand, and it's still tons of fun!
This.

AoE2 is a great RTS which has been the RTS of choice in my group of friends for years. The graphics are a little tough on the eyes but that doesn't stop it from being awesome.

You know the great thing? Somebody made a widescreen hack for it. It's somewhat rough on the edges, but still awesome:

It's a little old, but Rise of Nations is possibly the best introduction to the genre you'll find. Base building, resource gathering, tech-tree climbing, plenty of factions to choose from, a simple unit-counterunit dynamic, and some of the more contemporary concepts like area control are all there.

Company of Heroes is also a surprisingly gentle slope that introduces its streamlined concepts gently, and is a much more contemporary example, with very intuitive mechanics. (there is a machinegun, it will kill my mans, hide my mans behind the truck to stop the bullets! Fling grenades to kill machinegunner.)

Actually, yeah. Try Company of Heroes first. It's a great game.
this. my favvorite by far is CoH(company of heroes), but i reccomend rise of nations then CoH

Interesting. Although I think I'll wait and see if there's an update to get rid of the pink. Thanks for linking that though!

Well, you could go with the trial by fire approach and just get a "real" (I use that sarcastically) RTS right away. So with that go for StarCraft, Supreme Commander, or really most any well reviewed RTS.

If you're actually looking for gateway games things like Pikmin and Brütal Legend help develop your strategic thinking and time management. Halo Wars is a great next step or first if you feel like you already have a good sense of strategy and management.

Or if you want to just develop strategic thinking with no time pressure then you could start with turn-based strategy games like Civilization or Fire Emblem. It's actually rather hard to recommend your gateway without knowing more about your gaming history.

Oh and just to be clear, Halo Wars being simplified doesn't make it boring. Really it's just light on micromanagement (which is ideal for beginners), but it can get very intense regardless.

It also keeps the micromanagement down while still having all the core concepts of the genre, so you can learn all the basics without getting bogged down in them.

After that you can go "Well, that management stuff was way to easy" and pick up a more traditional RTS, "That management stuff was okay" and pick up Dawn of War 1, or go "fuck that base building management shit" and pick up Dawn of War 2... or I supposed someone could also go "This RTS shit is stupid: in which case they can... I dunno... find something else to do.

Eh, I never was much of a fan of Age of Empires.

Yes, it's simple, and a good RTS to start with, but I could never play it for very long. All of the countries felt like they played the same way. The simplicity and generally uniformity of the countries make for a good introduction, but it also felt vast and complicated for a newbie. For instance, when I first got into it, the sheer amount of minute differences between the insane number of countries just confused me. I played it for a while and got the hang of it, and it was good fun, but after a while, it just feels like it's the same thing over and over again.

My suggestion would be Starcraft. Starcraft II does a wonderful job of introducing the core of the gameplay through the campaign, and by the end, you'll be able to hold your own in multiplayer. There's a "intro" league for the newbies where the maps are designed to give time to build or experiment so you can get the hang of it. You can play all 50 games in that league, or you can leave it at anytime and get yourself ranked through the placement matches. You'll get placed in the league system. The system might have it's hiccups now and then, but for the most part, you play people that are about your skill level. Overtime, if you can stomach losing a few, you start to learn and figure out strategies. Then you'll find yourself climbing leagues and ladders until you get way high (the time it takes for this varies on the person who plays).

My only concern is that starcraft 2's campaign is much more appreciated if you played starcraft 1's campaign. Starcraft 1 isn't as good as 2 at introducing you to the system, and it feels a little bit older, but I wouldn't overlook it either. If you want to play for story, I'd get SC1 first, but if you don't care as much, I'd go ahead and get SC2.

EDIT: After posting this, I looked at my avatar and realized, whoever see's my avatar will think "Of course he's suggesting starcraft"

My first RTS was Dune 2, which is essentially a forerunner of C&C. I suppose I'd recommend starting out with Warcraft (1 or 2), Starcraft 1 or C&C - depending on taste - for a nice, not too complicated RTS that's easy to like.

For beginners, hmm... Trying as hard as I can to suppress my insane urge to shout "GET HOMEWORLD NAO, GREATEST RTS EVAR", I'd say you should start with AoE2, or Dawn of War perhaps. Both are relatively simple to get to grips with and good games to boot.

Actually I dunno whether Homeworld is good for beginners. I can imagine the full 3D combat being daunting to newcomers, but it's relatively simple to use and it also simplifies the whole micromanagement thing down. If you want my thoughts on it, see the following gushing fanboy tirade:

I would say "total annihilation" granted it's about as dated as windows '98 but by golly gosh, it's easy to pick up and play.

If you pick a certain map, the entire floor is metal so you can spam metal extractors (the name might be off, haven't played it in years), there is high winds so you can also spam wind turbines for loads of energy and you build hundreds of units.

You can buy it (and two expansions) here: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/total_anihilation_commander_pack

Get the demo to halo wars (it's pretty long) then grab Rome: Total War. You can dip in and out between actually playing the battles and leaving the computer to do it so if you feel the army will waste you, let the computer do a better job.
Then build up to your Warcraft and Starcrafts then check out Civ
