So, I was trying out WoW last night, and wound up failing at the whole, "playing" part of the game. SmallHarmlessKitten comes to my aid, and despite my meandering and general incompetence, I don't think he was getting all that frustrated.
I wind up doing that in a lot of Co-op games -the being helped by more experienced players- and I'm wondering if some people find a particular appeal to being a sort of mentor figure on games, especially to the less astute. If so, is it just on video games? Or do you like to shoot anyone who is not at your skill level with lasers?

The whole idea of "babysitting" is fun because you are helping out a person from getting completely overwhelmed and rage quitting on the team. I know I've done it before for others, and I helped them enjoy the game more.

I like helping other players, unless they're dicks. Then I set their asses up.

I think its part of the older brother instinct in me that I have to help and teach people not at my level. There are also many games in which I have to be baby-sat, so its good karma to help others when i can.

I mentored several people in WoW, Majesty and the Diablo games and have been mentored in several games like Majesty, the WarCraft games and most any shooter I get talked into playing.

Personaly I enjoy "baby-sitting" as long as the person I'm helping is friendly. It has bitten me in the ass a few times, but no biggie. Only thing I don't appreciate is when they don't return the hospitality, wether to me or to someone else.

The only person I have heavily mentored is my little brother. He's abso-fucking-lutely clueless when it comes to FPS games. I'll say something like, "there's a sniper to your left." *Pow. "Now see I told you didn't I? Throw a grenade at him next time." He has yet to improve very much though.

Only when I'm stuck somewhere myself or don't feel like doing other shit. I'll help a new guy a bit.

I like helping out people when they aren't complete douchebags. So anyone under the age of about fourteen is already out.

I always try to help out people who need it. It annoys me when people get cranky at new people and wont answer their questions. It is a great way to make friends.

I used to be a mentor figure to some of the WoW players in my guild, I recruited a few of them, and then helped with instances. I did do it for them a few times like in Shadow fang keep, that took me like 5 minutes since i was multi target specced. so i just ran them like 5 times.. they were gratefull forever (till i quit playing).

I've never had a problem with helping other players, because I'd like to think at least someone would do the same thing for me if I was new. If everyone was too elitist to help newer players then the fan base would die out fast.

I will always help the new guy. I like to break the stereotype (more then being a girl gamer) by actually being nice to people I meet online. Besides, I was new at things once before so why not help someone out?

If you have ever played a mmo in a raiding guild in any sort of leadership position or or helped organise "babysitting" is next to all you will be doing. Played WoW around a year ago now and dear lord it was a mess we had guys who spoke other languages, bad players, people not paying atention our guild leader was great but trying ot clear raid content back then took real effort and dedication but the payoff was always great really felt like an accomplishment when you took down a boss you had been working on for months with 25 to 40 layabouts finaly pulling together.

Personaly I always enjoy helping out newer players or those not used to gaming, aslong as they are polite or at the very least not complete fuckwits.

When I was playing SW: Galaxies, I was helping out a lot of weaker players.

It didn't help my superiority complex, much.

I'll help other player, give them tips etc.

Especially if they're in my sniping spot spamming rockets at far off enemies.

I actually have a bad habit of helping anyone who asks. I can have days where I spend more time guiding people than actually training.
