I'm about to get my new laptop in a couple of hours (yay for graduation presents)and I have a question about Steam.

Is there a way to back up my single player saves from a few of my games (mainly Torchlight) so I don't have to start over on the new laptop? The Steam backup feature doesn't do saves

It is possible but the only way I know of is by copying them manually. Saves usually get placed somewhere in your "Documents\My Games" folder but it is possible they are somewhere else. Of you can't find it at first just google the game and "save location" or something similar.

EDIT: Just to clarify: almost always the save games get placed at the same place independent of being a steam version or not. So steam doesn't really know where the save games are.

Thanks. So on my new laptop after I install the game I look for the save folder that was in the old laptop and throw the files in there? I'll try that and see how it works

Torchlight has Steam Cloud saves, so they'll just be synced to there. No problem at all.

Just start the game on your laptop, it should copy them down.
