Backwards Compatibility

I like backwards compatibility.

There are a few PS2 and PS1 games that I'd like to play again but my PS3 doesn't have BC and I can't be bothered with trying to find and hook up my PS2 to the TV that has a Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 and computer connected to it along with 3 computers worth of internet cables and a phone line going around the back of it.

I like it but find it annoying when some games don't work. Such as Timesplitters 2 on the Xbox. That pissed me off.

I love bc, I need bc, I mean it is such a pain in the ass to lug out old consoles and hook them up. That and If they break its always good to know your new console will keep that collection of games you amassed during a generations run will not be locked in some kind of stasis where you can't play your old games because you really just can't.

I'd love some bc in the ps3, my mountainous pile of ps2 games have been rendered unseable by a controller thief shortly before the ps3's release. my old xbox however sits, still hooked up to the tv with a bigger pile of games than any of my other platforms.

While I wanted my PS3 to have backwards compability I probably wouldn't play much PS2 games anyways. After having my huge stack of PS3/Xbox 360 games I don't care much for them, even if it might be nostalgic I tend to get disapointed once I actually start playing.
Besides, now they're starting to remake PS2 games in HD, so I don't complain even if they're milking money from us.

Also have my PS2 plugged in standing next to my 360. Reckon I got about one hour playtime since two years.

I just think backwards compatibility is just handy.

I'm sorry, but no matter how hard you look after your xbox, your ps2, or even your megadrive, eventually the hardware is going to fail.

Playing older games on the newer consoles, means I can hopefully make the older console last longer. (Less chance of it overheating, or the laser breaking ect.)

This is why digital backups (and emulation) are so important in my opinion.
So long as the data is still being moved around, then the games of that time can never be lost.

Sure its not 100% legal or authentic, but look at books.
Alot of books are reprinted and turned into ebooks.

If no one looked after the books, preserving the stories and history they contain, then Shakespears works could have been lost, and the English curriculum would be very, very, different! XD

In short, I was going to buy a PS3, then Sony dropped BC, then I didn't. So it's pretty important to me. I wouldn't buy one even if there were a paid upgrade; it's the principle of the damn thing.

There's a version with backwards compatibility (20gig and a couple others) but it's a little more expensive, and a smaller HDD than other versions.

60 gig models are all Backwards compatible. Only some 20 gig models are(could be wrong about 20 gigs I was thinking my brother had a non BC 20 gig but could have been a 40 gig model). Around my part of the world a 60 BC PS3 will cost more them a used non-BC PS3 but less then a new PS3.

The size of the hard drive is really a non issue as they can be switched out for your size of choice when ever you feel like it.

I have thought about getting one in the past, but really for me there would be no point except the 2 extra USB ports and the multi-card reader.

Considering my mountain (and I do mean mountain) of PS2 games, and extras of my games I got cheap, but I'd be pissed if they were going to -charge- me for backwards compatability. No way in heck would I buy it. I use the PS3 more as a blu-ray player though than a gaming system, and just hook up my old PS2 slim when I want to play those kind of games, so meh.

I was surprised that the PS3 just stopped being backwards compatable on the PS3 slims. Mind you the PS2 is still being sold and bought in new box deals so I guess it's a case of Sony reckoning that:

A - You buy a new PS2 to play PS2 games, or
B - Still have your old PS2 so wouldn't see the point.

Can you imagine how retarded the Wii would look if it had cartridge slots for NES, SNES, and N64 games, as well as the disk drive and Gamecude controller ports. I suppose it would also need control ports for NES, SNES, and N64 controlers as well.

That would be a stupid (in a bad way) amount of Backward compatibility.

Well, i actually own a Wii, and would not have bought it if it had all that dumb shit attached to it, I am sure a lot of the casual gamers that currently own a Wii feel the same.

I am fine with the Virtual console for all my nostalgic needs.

I think that what most people want is an option to play games they loved as a kid, and not necessarily the exact game cartridge/disk they played as a kid.

I like playing old games on their original consoles. When i feel like playing Mega Drive i plug my Mega Drive and play it. My ps2 is still connected to my TV, so i dont need backwards compatibility on my ps3. To me it´s unnecessary, but i can see how some people would need it in order to play some classic games.

It's a great idea to get people involved in your consoles or games. It's a great idea, and I'm sad Sony scrapped the idea.

It definitely solidified my purchase of a PS3.

Though they did remove PS2 compatibility, it still has Ps1 compat, and that is what made the deal.

However if there was an add on for the wii like a multi card reader nintendo would make a stack of money. Especially if compatible with virtual console.
