That's one of my favourite things about Firefly: You would think that Crow would become a recurring villain, always trying to kill Mal, because that's how things normally work. But they just subvert it by having him kick Crow into the engine.
Or how, in War Stories, Zoe said "This is something the Captain has to do himself." And he replies with, "No, no it isn't!" And they open fire.
So delicious.

Exactly. It's kind of sad that "breaking the tired old forumla," as you say, is a good point in a show. What I mean is, it's a shame that it's such a rarity for them to do so that we praise it.

You speak the truth. Whenever a series has the courage to be unconformatist, that's when it has potential to be truly great.
