Anyone else remember the Superman Returns game? It seemed like it might be alright at first. Metropolis was huge and flying was actually pretty fun. But wow, did it need improvements, a lot of them obvious:
- There's no point in having a map if it doesn't actually show you where things are. The races and side missions needed to be shown on there
- Giving the city a health meter wasn't a bad idea, but you shouldn't be forced to having to take care of every single scuffle, either. The game seriously doesn't let you do anything as long as a crime is in progress. To add insult to injury, these can even spawn on the other side of the map, which can take a while to get to.
- Speaking of stopping bad guys, how come there are no actual crimes? It's all killer robots and monsters, never once do you get to stop a bank robbery or something actually done by a human.
- What does this game have to do with Superman Returns? Sure, it has Brandon Routh. But that's pretty much it, never once do you actually play through a scene from the movie, instead those bits are just lightly sprinkled throughout cutscenes. Then again, the movie didn't really have much action, so...
I'm actually somewhat saddened that no one has tried making another Superman game since this. The game may have sucked, but it had some excellent ideas that could truly make a good game if given proper development time.
