I had problems with depression in my sophomore and junior years and now I don't have the grades to get into the school I want to...out of state so somewhat harder to get into but not incredibly competitive...if I go somewhere in state that will accept me and get good grades there, will it give me a better chance of getting in to the place I want to go if I apply to transfer next year? Or will my low high school GPA still weigh me down?

Try transferring I suppose. BUT DO NOT be that asshole who constants says "Oh this is my safety school, I'm transferring next semester". Because if you don't transfer, you've alienated a lot of people. And hell, you might actually like it. I'm not in my first choice school but I love it here. And honestly, unless your first choice is a *very* reputable school then most people aren't going to be able to tell the difference between 2 schools prestige. If thats something you're even worried about I mean. Because you're going to have to pay a lot more just for going out of state.

It's always good to check if the school you are hoping to enrol in allows portfolio entry - it can be a good alternative. ^^

The short answer is that good grades in college will almost always completely overrule bad grades in high school.

Listen to EClaris on the being an asshole about it thing, and on the thing about the secondary school often being a better choice than the first. I was crushed when my first choice waitlisted me and my parents were opposed to pursuing it, but I went to my second choice and think that it's the greatest place on earth and that I would have HATED my first choice, and I'm pretty sure that this is partly because I came into #2 with no expectations and was thus pleasantly surprised by all the stuff I liked (versus if I'd gone to #1, in which case I would have been unpleasantly surprised by all the stuff I didn't).

Also note the financial advice there. From a purely numbers point of view, there aren't a whole lot of programs in the country that are actually worth OOS (or private) tuition, and most of those are pretty competitive. If you go to your #2 and hate it, try to transfer to #1, but bear in mind that student debt follows you everywhere and that most degrees help you out by existing, not by being from particular schools. (The existing part is also probably going to change in the next decade or so, but whatever)

You could take an extra year in comunity college to beef the grades up.
the number of years it takes is not relevent getting good grades is so take an absolute cake walk of a course to act a a thickener.

It will be embarassing at first but I beleive the school of your dreams is a once in a liftime event. you are only young oonce so get in to the good school as no give a shit if you are one year older.
