Bad Marketing

I'm sure most of us have seen the Extra Credits episode where they talk about EA's counter-intuitive marketing. Marketing so bad that it makes us not want to buy their product. But of course, EA isn't the only team we can facepalm at.

What commercials on TV or other ads have you seen that have actually changed your mind and made a company lose your patronage?

My example is the recent DQ advertising on television, trying as hard as they can to rip off the Old Spice guy but failing in every possible way.

Hairproduct commercials in general, because they're. All. The. Same. No difference, besides for different women getting a bucket emptied over their head.

You just ignore them eventually, because you know what they're going to say to you.

Cobblestone (a gas station+car wash center) created an advertisement where...you know what? I'll just embed it. It speaks for itself.

Most beauty care products feature women that crawl out of the uncanny valley at night to drink the blood of the living. With a little bit of work, the Resident Evil 2 trailer (for the movie) could have been an awesome bit of social satire.

Good marketing is offering details about your product and letting the target audience gather their own opinions about it.

Bad marketing is offering opinions about your product and leaving the audience completely in the dark about details.

Apparently this advert has raised the website's profile and sales, so it must be doing something right...but if Russell Howard gets a cheer when he calls it annoying, then I think the majority opinion is clear.
