To me, posting a user review on the Escapist is difficult. By the time I even play the game in question, there is already several reviews out for the game. Almost making it pointless to even consider. So I figured I might as well review a game no one gives a crap about. The game I'm talking about is Bad Mojo.
Bad Mojo was developed by Pulse Entertainment and published by Acclaim, realesed in February 29, 1996 for PC, DOS, and Mac. The story revolves around Roger Samms, who lives upstairs of a run down bar that is being faced with health code violations. He stills a million dollars of loan money from a science corperation and plans to set out and start a new life in Mexico City. After an argument with is landlord Eddie Battito, he finds an old trinket from his childhood. Mysteriously enough, the trinket transforms Roger into a cockroach. Now he must travel around the bar to uncover his past and get him back to normal. Some of the story is revealed in cutscenes amongst levels and through discovering items around the bar. The acting is very over the top its almost funny and the cutscenes to manage to entertain. The story is interesting and engaging to say the least and one of the games high points
You play the game as a cockroach traveling through the Bar, avoiding obstacles and solving puzzles. Much like earlier adventure games, the game does not hold back a chance to kill you for curiosity. Unlike previous adventure games, this game gives you five lives and when you lose them you are forced to start the level all over again. Completely pointless as it takes very little time to get back where you were after you died. The games puzzles are fairly simple, usually requiring you to move an object or turn an object or do various other tasks. The game limits what you can do based on what a cockroach can do, which is not very much. Most of the puzzles envolve exploration. Roger can travel up furniture, through pipes, through holes in walls, and much more. Considering the limited amount of actions that a cockroach can do, the puzzles do pose a good amount of challenge.
I think one of the biggest parts of this game is the grossness of it. If not obvious enough by the fact that your a cockroach traveling trough a bar. You'll see your fair share of dead animals and blood and travel through a filthy bathroom and a kitchen with enough grease to kill a baby elephant. This is definitely not a game for those with weak stomachs.
This game sold reasonably well when it was first released. It was even remade in 2004 for a new generation of gamers to enjoy. Ever since it's launch, not very many have talked about it much. Maybe that's a good thing. No matter how good a game is it can always be over hyped. However, I still recommend it. I mean, who wouldn't want to play as a cockroach?
