Well, the global economic meltdown is now getting too close to home. Sony has announced it is going to lay-off 8000 full time employees and 8000 temp workers. Full article below.

I see stories like this every day it seams. Now it's personal *single tear falls from cheek*.

And I don't even have a PS3 yet, maybe they will do a price drop.

I also remember hearing that pirates were interupting shipments of games to the West as well...tough times, tough times.

I was reading somewhere that Sony had lost on the PS3 more than they've made on the PS2. Can't find the link, anyone want to point me in the right direction or call shenanigans?

Another price drop!!!! I don't think so because Sony is already losing big money now that they dropped to $399. It costs more than the original $599 to make a PS3 ,but maybe the money saved from all the employees could be used to make a price drop possible.

Really, google is your friend my good sir.

ANYhow...i'm concerned a bit sure, but not terribly so. If this was Nintendo I'd be more worried, because Sony doesn't just make consoles and games where as Nintendo only makes that...

Being a boat owner myself, I find the idea that there are real pirates still out there... totally awesome. Where I live, if you actually fly a pirate flag (Jolly Roger like flag) on your boat, you can be ticketed for piracy. I almost want to do it just to say that I was ticketed for piracy.

That is probably the best way to look at it. Sony does have their hands in a lot of pies and really, the last few years, they seen to have kinda lost some direction. They have lost sales for general electronics to competitors (LG for example) and their launch of the PS3 was very lackluster and a very near Epic Fail. The company as a whole seems to need some direction. Unlike other companies, I don't think they are in any danger of complete failure (like the US auto industry), but like you say, this is a sign of the times. May companies are being forced to run more lean.

The lack of exclusives is kinda sapping the PS3. The PS2 was the biggest BECAUSE of the huge number of titles, the majority being exclusives. But since developers want to get money from both 360 and PS3 owners, most games are made to fit both systems - leaving the better hardware of the PS3 severely underused, and as such, overpriced. Too bad, I LIKE my PS3, but my 360 steals its thunder time and again.

Balaclava wearing thugs with guns, knives and speedboats doesn't really inspire me with confidence to set sail on the high waves.

On Topic: This is the result of bad planning by Sony and taking normal business practice and chucking it out the window.

O-man if it starts affecting video games I'm going to cry. Not really.

But really, the only way I would care is if the game prices go up, which I highly doubt.

If you're going to be ticketed for piracy, you may as well shanghai some babes and steal some gold. It can't be that hard, them pirates don't seem too bright.

I like the idea too until I remember that sadly, they're not using cutlasses and flintlocks, but armor piercing sub-machine guns. And getting a ticket for piracy would make you one hell of a bad ass. I wouldn't mess with you, that's for sure.

I have a personal grudge against Sony for shutting down Lik-San my favourite site for importing cheap games from Hong-Kong.

BUT! I don't want them to fail because I fear a world where Microsoft has a monopoly on consoles, nothing good could ever come of it.

Quite possibly but these companies are executing big dollar long ball investment strategies. So short term figures really don't paint the whole picture.
