Do you get the same sense of achievement when you get the little notification saying that you've just beaten a game than when you get the email telling you you've created a topic with 1000 views or replies?

Neither. When I got to 99 posts I very nearly closed my account and made a new one to avoid getting any.

I probably named this wrong, I remembered the mods don't like Vs threads, but I think this should be ok, hopefully

I do get that fluffy feeling when I get a badge - albeit the ones I have now aren't...particularly hard to get. So maybe when I grab a more difficult badge, it'll be even better!

I presume this thread was inspired by your recent Hot Topic badge! Congrats!

An achievement might give me a gamerpic so achievements > badges. :)
I like badges better because I'm happy with my RVB tucker pic for gamerpic :D

Depends on the badge. The "Face with a Name" badge was hardly epic, but I was proud to get my 50 replies badge, and ecstatic to get my Bamalam badge.

I'm always excited about achievements, however. So I'll say I prefer them.

I suppose the psychological reward is pretty similar. Work towards something 'productive' (I use this term very loosely), complete milestone, receive notification and some sort of acknowledgment of success. It's an effective system!

When we see some sort of Escapist equivalent of gamesaves or glitching to get undeserved badges, then we'll know badges are on par with achievements in terms of 'comparatively useless things that people nonetheless crave'.

i love badges and achievments just as much, really i just like it when my computer or xbox tells me i did something right and i kicked ass at it

i got the HL2 achievement "Barnacle Bowling" when you kill 5 barnacles with one explosive barrel and i didnt even realise that i could get an achivement for it

They're the best ones, apart from in Soul Calibre 4, I got some achievements just by massing buttons

God damn I hated that game

For me, I value my achievements as much as the next guy and I make a point of trying to get as many as possible, but since I don't have Xbox LIVE and on the Escapist people can see and appreciate my badges, I'd have to go with badges as what I prefer over achievements.

It depends on how hard the badge is to get and how it looks, I'm proud of my 'on fire' and 'Spartan' badges...

achievemnts they add up in the thousands and make you rethink your life.... then you continue going for seriously 2.0 because you remembered you have no life

They're neat little things to have, but ultimately doesn't impact the way I post or play.
