Now I have your attention. Ahem.

Trying to install Mass Effect 1, as I want to replay ME2 but with a ME1 character. That's the backstory.

I try to install ME1 on my Windows 7. It's all going great but, when I get to entering the activation key, I enter it, click next, and then it goes to saying that my installation has been canceled.
I didn't click cancel, no.
I haven't really been able to find a fix on t'internet either, so I came to this clever group of people.
H3lp!

P.S: Any more info needed, just ask. My computer is more then able to handle ME by the way.

EDIT: According to my Program Compatibility thingywhatsit search, the issue it's found is an "Incompatible Application". And, err, that's all.

All sorted now.

I don't have the answer, but somehow I think you'd get more help with a title that makes sense in relation to your post. :p

General Windows 7 fix:

Right click on the installer and try it in each of:

Administrator Mode
Compatibility mode (for Vista/XP/2000)

That tends to fix most random problems. Otherwise, I can't help you more.

Ah, but how many more people will respond to a topic called this than "Plz help with Me2".
:D

Thanks, I'll give that a try.
Nay. Nothing that I'm aware of.

make sure you typed in the act. key right.
It's nothing to do with that one, even if I had got it wrong. (But as it's now my 11th try, I doubt I have :p)

Maybe ME1 doesn't work on Win 7, especially on 64 bit. But that's just a wild guess which probably doesn't make any sense, since you say it canceled when you tried to enter the CD-Key, sorry If I can't be any more helpful.

All I know is that in January this year I replayed ME1 also on Win XP, cause I didn't saved a character and I just couldn't start ME2 without making a character import ... and on XP the game worked just fine, it didn't canceled on installation that's for sure. :p

Ah. More info.
Anything I use to install it (Auto-run, Setup, etc) is always 'Incompatible'.
Me being thick and all, I have no idea how I would change that. Anyone else?

Well yippy doodah!
I manage to get past that problem.
Then I get past the Config-Crash.
THEN I get past the bugged out Bioware code.
And so, I get into the game. Change the graphics up...
Aaand..
It's gone black.
It's a "Non-preset mode"
If anyone has any ideas other than reinstalling it, that'd be great. I've spent hours upon hours fixing all this and changing the codes around and files, so I'm kind of tired.

Edit: All sorted.
It just required changing the places of a few strips of coding.

Mass Effect 1 has an issue with CD-Key activation. I had the same problem, although I was able to finish installation, it just wouldn't let me run the .exe because it said the cd-key was incorrect. I talked with customer service for a good hour without getting anywhere.

Anyway, the only way I found around it was to use a no-cd crack. Generally I'd feel bad about suggesting that to anyone but I own the game and if you're installing from a disc, I assume you do as well. And I believe that if I paid my $50 for the game, I should damn well be able to play it without having the stupid disc in the drive.

I looked at the Bioware forums, and picked this up:

I remember I had a problem like this installing Mass Effect on Windows 7 64-bit, but I can't remember if it was on the main game or on one of the DLCs.

Try this:

Quote: Run the installer as administrator, but when it pops up the screen asking for your license key, open the task manager and kill that process. The installer will then open a new screen 'verifying license files' and after a few seconds will pop up a second window asking for your license. Put in your serial here and hit done, and it will install. Success!
Hope it helps.

Sure. What do you need to know?

Just what files/folders you had to change and what was causing the problem in the code, if you don't mind.
Ah. Misscomunication. I'd changed them around beforehand to try and change the gameplay.
But I had to move "paul.dll" out of (I think) the binary folder out of Program Files to make it work properly, also I have to start the game up out of the Binary folder each time, to skip the bugged EA registration end.

The first problem, with the cancelation, you End the Process (Process, not just program) and it should skip it, allowing you to install.

Then you move out the paul.dll folder and start it up in the Binary folder (Computer/Local Disk(C:)/Program Files (x86)/Mass Effect/Binaries then click on the MassEffect option.

Sorry, I'm not that great at explaining things.
