To counter this cool thread:

Mine would be:

Smashing Pumpkins (I loved them but Billy seriously needs to know when to quit)

Rolling Stones

Aerosmith

Blink 182

Green Day

I think this is heading for a flame war...

I'm wearing an Aerosmith shirt. But...when you have to stop the tour for for band injuries TWICE...then I think God is trying to say something.

I agree with Smashing Pumpkins, they haven't made a good album since Mellon Collie. As for blink-182, they haven't been making music together for almost 4 years now - they JUST got back together, so telling them to stop playing now is unfair, I'm pretty stoked for a new blink album. As for Green Day, 21st Century Breakdown was disappointing, but I think they still have potential left.

Apart from that, most of the bands I listen to have stopped making new material anyway, so it's all good to me.

I don't think any of those bands should stop playing and why should they? It means less money for them and no one wants to not be rich. Hell, this topic might as well be "Forumers that need to stop posting".

And I will help you.

DragonForce. They've got what one song? The rest of them all sound exactly the same. Honestly they could be making such better meaningful music...

I'm actually gonna have to say Metallica. Absolutely fantastic band, and brought metal out of the closet of whinging, screaming, weirdos. Then they released St. Anger, and any remaining respect for them I had washed away around the same time I deleted all of that album off of my computer. How the band that made Sandman, Unforgiven, and Turn the Page released that festering turd of a record is beyond me.

My Other Bands That Should Stop:

My Chemical Romance: This one is a bit of a caveat, since it's not so much "they simply have to stop" as "they should either evolve, or stop". I like songs about my girlfriend/father/mother/3rd grade teacher never really caring about me as much as the next entirely heterosexual guy, but they've already said basically everything that could be said.

Single File: Again, not a categorical "you blow, stfu". It's more that I really liked their early stuff, when it was funny and self-deprecating. Now they have lyrics like "I'm sad about girls" and it's just terrifyingly bad.

I agree with OP, especially about Blink-182 and Greenday.

For Greenday, it's that they've really become way too full of themselves, which loses a bit of the wit and charm of earlier albums (and they've become overplayed, but that's besides the point). If you're going to try to do social and political critiques, take a page from CSNY: don't be a smarmy little douchebag about it. American Idiot (as an album) sounds like every single bad stereotype about my generation played out: oversensitive, presumptuous, arrogant, self-absorbed, and other bad things. Also, if you make a music video in which you sing "I walk a lonely road... I walk alone", please don't be flanked by your two buddies at the time, it loses its impact.

I want to avoid the cliched ones (Good Charlotte, Nickelback, Insane Clown Posse, Dashboard Confessional, Three Days Grace, ect), so, continuing:

The Academy Is: I'm not sure what happened here. They moved past "evolving and maturing" and straight into "bum-raping any kind of pitch, tone, or rhythm".

Jack's Mannequin: Kind of sad, actually, the decline from heartfelt and somber into balls-out emo, all in the span of two albums. Also, when your music video is directed by anyone even tangentially related to "Twilight", you need to find a new gender 'cause I'm revoking your dude license

Rage Against The Machine: Again, once you've exhausted an entire catalog of songs about evil capitalism/authority/government, it's time to either move on, or shut down. There are only so many ways to say "fascism is bad" before one ceases to think you have a message, and begins to believe you can only really grasp that concept.

That's all I've got for now

It was about the bold where I stopped respecting anything you had to say about music at all. "Metallica's" Turn the Page is a cover of the song by Boy Seger. Though I believe their version is better that is besides the point. Yes everyone agrees with you that St. Anger is shit and that is why every time one of these threads comes up that a few people blurt out "Metallica are old and need to stop producing shit!" For these people I have two words. Death Mag-fucking-netic! It's not in the same class as Master of Puppets but it shows they are getting back on the right track, especially with Suicide & Redemption (which is just vintage Metallica twin guitar!). The Day That Never Comes made "Triple J's Hottest 100" (Australian Radio station) for the year as well as a few more lists. Metallica are still going very strong and with the release of Guitar Hero: Metallica I think there is much call and reason for them to keep touring and making new albums.

I'm so hoping they can come out with some new stuff and from what I've seen it's only going to improve on Death Magnetic. I still haven't seen them live because I don't even know the last time they came to Australia, it's been to long, I was much to young for a Metal concert last time they were here. I'm praying to gods I don't believe in that they come down here, I don't care how long I have to wait I just want to see them live before I die!

My enjoying of a song which happened to be a cover (though, thanks for letting me know that) seems a bit of a small reason to completely lose respect for anything I have to say. I've heard some mixed things about Death Magnetic, so I've yet to listen. My entire thing was that they became over-commercialized and lost interest in making... You know... Music. I'm not sure if GH: Metallica will do anything to stem that tide.

But, you can also chalk it up to me being an indie music snob. I stop liking almost any band once it becomes too mainstream

It's not that you enjoy the song. It's a fantastic song. It's the fact that you were clearly oblivious to the fact that Turn the Page is a cover, as you just admitted. Death Magnetic wasn't a perfect album, but some of the songs on there (Suicide & Redemption and The Day that Never Comes to name) show that they are going back to what made them such a fantastic band in the first place.

I also don't think that something (music in particular) becoming to mainstream is a reason to stop liking something, especially something that was and is so good. Frankly I don't care whether or not people like Metallica or not, what I do care about is when people start saying that they need to stop playing because they are getting old or have lost their way (St. Anger).
