Ok, so here is a totally self serving post that will hopefully give some decent ideas.

I was a major music junky in junior high and high school, listening to everything I could find and going to live shows every weekend, but when I graduated in 2001 I more or less gave that up, totally devoting myself to college and then work. I've been trying to break out of my workaholic lifestyle and get back into some of my hobbies and music is one of the things I really miss.

Only thing is, I realize I don't really know too many modern bands that I like and I don't think its a nostalgia thing, I think its more that I literally am just not up on things especially if it doesn't get a lot of radio play.

So I am calling on you, fellow escapists, for recommendations! I personally tend to be a rock person(tool, alice in chains, led zepplin) but my tastes really run the gamut so lets get some mixed ideas of what is good out there!

To try and add a few of my own suggestions about some bands I have enjoyed from this time period, I would say the Gorillaz, the Decemberists, She Wants Revenge, and Cage the Elephant all probably count. The big problem is, thats where my brain stops.

Help me out!

Most of the bands I listen to are all mostly from 2000's and on.
Here are a few:
-Rise Against
-Streetlight Manifesto (just found out about them in december and I pretty much instant;y loved them after listening to their "Somewhere the Between" album) Also just to let you know, they are a ska punk band.
-30 seconds to mars
-Breaking Benjamin
-Alexisonfire

Well, considering my music taste from the last decade is pretty much exclusively niche genres, then I have to say that I can't really help you find bands that you should know. I'm more into 60's, 70's and 90's stuff.

With the exception of Madness, Bowie and Joy Division. Seriously, fuck the 80's.

Pendulum
Muse
Biffy Clyro
Enter Shikari
[flame shield]
Linkin Park
Fall Out Boy
[/flame shield]
You Me At Six.

Don't let YMA6 and FOB's poser image and hoardes of fangirls fool you; both bands do some pretty damn awesome music.

Oh, and I do NOT recommend Linkin Park's latest album.
Unless your into monotonous sound effects mixed with generic, unimaginative "rock".

The Arusha Accord, I have an obsession with this band at the moment they are mental!

Dead Swans, crazy band, seen them live put on a mental show!

I know the stuff Meowchef put up, those are pretty much all band's I have enjoyed.

I have at least -heard- of some of those bands, MellowFellow, but I couldn't put any of the names to actual music. I'll definitely give a listen though.

And no worries about whether its niche rather than popular, Red Right Hand(excellent reference by the way), a lot of the stuff I think most of us enjoy fall into those off beat categories. I know I dig weird stuff like the Decemberists, Mr. Bungle, and Deltron that definitely don't fit their own genre very well. The question is more what you should know because its good rather than because its popular.

Also, I do have to give a little defense for the 80s. For the most part of my life I've been with you, digging older rock and then grunge era rock while skipping over the hair bands(there was some good new wave, so I always thought the 80s was the one decade I liked the pop more than the rock) but recently I've had a friend who is a big hair back rocker showing me a lot of the back catalog type of stuff that is surprisingly good.

You like classic rock. I'm not sure if that includes prog rock but I'm going to assume it does. Eat coheed and cambria.

My favourite song by them placed over clips from an irrelevant sub-par movie. Enjoy!

Good on you CaptainPirate, I had forgotten about Muse though I only know them through their Knights of Cydonia video. I will have to investigate further.

I always was really mixed on Linkin Park, at least their early stuff(don't know their newer stuff). It had a good sound to it and some of the songs even were meaningful but it always felt too purposeful to me for some reason, like people decided to put together the elements to create a hit band rather than it happening organically. This might have just been my music snobbery at the time though, so I'll definitely go back and give them a listen. Don't know most of those other bands, so I'll definitely be going through this list.

The Arusha Accord is compared to the Dillinger Escape Plan on wikipedia who I know, a bit outside my normal style of music but could be interesting. I'll definitely check it out.

A lot of what's been said is great stuff.
I would add:
The Gaslight Anthem
Mother Mother
River City Extension (Sadly, a bit hard to find)
Vampire Weekend
Also, if you're looking for music, I recommended listening to the radio, I'm always amazed at how many bands I've overlooked that are out there.

The Arusha Accord are compared to The Dillinger Escpae plan because there is no-one else to compare them to hahah. They have some similarities but the two are quite different from each other.

How about The Darkness, the glam metal/glam rock band. They were all over the world in 2000-2001 with songs like 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love', 'Growing on Me' and 'Love is Only a Feeling'. I would put videos up of The Darkness but most if not all of them have at least one shot of Justin Hawkins in the all-together.

Another band is The Rasmus. I only really remember them for one song, 'In the Shadows'. I find myself humming it at work sometimes, its just got one of those tunes.

EDIT: Forgot about Muse (somehow). Personally, I think that 'Absolution' was their best album. It's got some awesome tracks on it, 'Apocalypse Now', 'Stockholm Syndrome' and 'Sing for Absolution' just to name a few.

Hmm, well I'll list what I can think of
Disturbed
3 inches of Blood(think Judas priest but about midevil times)
Them Crooked Vultures
Robert Plant's band of joy
Mastodon
Steel Panther(comedy faux 80's hair metal)
Stone Sour
Slipknot
Five Finger Death Punch
Aesop rock(he's been around for a while, but he did some really good stuff recently)
Iron Maidens been doing some good albums recently
GWAR(they've also been around, but they've really taken a turn for the metal and I love it)
System of a down
and finally, Lamb of God
Not all of these are completely last decade, but lots of their best work is.

Definitely a lot of stuff to look into.

I actually listened to the darkness album on my iPod on the way to work this morning, that fell just into the range of when I was still keeping up on things and they are one of my 'guilty pleasure' bands.

I've seen GWAR live and they do an amazing show, but I've never been able to get into their album music(unless you can find the rare GWAR vs the Aquabats which was awesome).

You guys are hitting on a lot of bands I do like in your suggestions(stone sour, system of a down, death cab for cutie, staind, ect) so I am sure I'll dig a lot of the other stuff and my iPod is going to get a lot of new blood soon.

A quick shout out of my own to one of the above mentioned bands, I've seen Iron Maidens live twice now and they really should be more well known than they are. If you like female vocals and/or Iron Maiden you would be missing out not to give them a shot.

Green Day. I swear, there are so many people who don't know who they are,yet they're one of the biggest musical names out there.
