so, interesting video on gamergate.

http://chezapocalypse.com/episodes/s4e7-gamergate/

It has to be said, it takes its time initially setting up and explaining 'Based Assumptions', before going on to explain how these apply in GamerGate and its audience.

I have to say, if nothing else its made me understand somewhat WHY GamerGaters can be so vitriolic, stubborn and defensive, even if I feel their reasons are completely wrong.

oh hey! this video...

I watched it last night but didn't feel right about unleashing it on the forums

I'll also say my "rules of gender debates" thread was essentially this supposed to be this (albeit less thought out) a tearing down of base assumptions

The biggest problem with this video is similar to the problems with the Tropes vs Women videos - there is an assumption by the creator of the video that their conclusions are correct simply because they say they are correct. There is very little attempt made to actually back up their conclusions, which leads me to wonder if the video is meant simply to "preach to the choir". People who support #GamerGate aren't going to be swayed, at all, by this video and people who don't support GamerGate are going to react to a video like this like Avengers Fanboys seeing the new Avengers trailer - absolute adoration.

All in all, this video adds nothing to the #GamerGate controversy except even more fuel to the fire that keeps #GamerGate going. It is likely to revitalize detractors by giving them something quasi-academic to point to, and it will likely revitalize #GamerGate supporters (many of whom already have a huge distrust of "academics", including myself) who will have another quasi-academic attack on them to go with years of attacks from a feminist quasi-academic viewpoint.

This'll go over real well. The video creator stated in his official comment that any commenters have to accept his premise in order to discuss.

No, this is just another shameless opportunist trying to grab a little attention by wading into the debate with an inflammatory opinion. And for the record I do not support GG nor am I against it, I believe no intelligent debate on the subject is possible while people on both sides act like monstrous arseholes. And even if they didn't I don't believe the goals of both the pro and anti gg camps are entirely incompatible, but while the trolls continue to fan the flames people aren't going to notice this.

That said, I did appreciate the videos intense irony.

.
you know assuming that there is always a "middle ground" to be had in any given discussion and that middle ground is inherently "correct" is a logical fallacy in of itself

Hey maybe I'm wrong, i'm not so stubborn and inflexible that I wouldn't be able to recognize and accept that my assumptions are way off base. But I have my beliefs and don't feel they can be discussed properly when all I see is two groups of people acting like toddlers, pulling each others hair and calling each other names.

Uh, I'm actually half with him, sort of, well... yeah sort of. I don't want any of these sites "killed" like what it seems of that "movement"[footnote] They don't have enough respect to talk to its greatest opponents by name, I won't even address them by name [/footnote], but I can see how a place like Gawkers or Kotaku or Polygon or a lot of these places can improve. Now, I will however state, that group isn't talking about the two groups I want changed most about this whole thing, the gaming community active in these forums and the really big publishers who try to deceive many of us. Also, what you said reminds me of Bob once again:

I don't necessarily agree with all of this. Yes, people have competing interests, but I think regarding this, there's a good point to be made we can ultimately have, not a ground where everyone can agree, but one where a good chunk of us can.
