I'm taking a journalism class at my university and we've been tasked with interviewing some event organizers, I've opted to do so over skype (due to preference of those I'm interviewing) and I need some recording software to get the job done, nothing extravagant, free is of course an absolute plus.

I'm also taking up a video making class (forget its name) next semester and if possible it would be nice if the programs were easy to use in those sorts of activities so that I could practice with the program (I would end up changing it to whatever program the class recommends come next semester, but getting used to these sorts of programs isn't going to do me any harm).

Most audio recording programs will set you back a couple hundred and that's before we're talking about audio interfaces here.

However, you can never go wrong with Audacity. It's free and works on just about everything. If you have a built in mic in your computer then you don't need to get an external mic, but I would recommend wearing headphones while you record since the mic will pick you up and anything else coming from your PC. Audacity is really easy to use and it doesn't take long to figure out how everything works in terms of plug-ins and all that jazz.

I would recommend getting the mp3 download for it as well since .wav is too huge and .ogg is not popular enough to work with some video stuff. It's a separate downloadable plug-in and takes some finding on the website, but it will make your life much much easier in the long run.

I hope that helps!

Audacity is a great piece of software however it may be difficult to set up for recording both microphone input and the output from the other person (definitely possible to do however it would be a huge fuck around, trust me). If I were in your situation I'd probably use FRAPS even though it's more video capturing software because I already have it, I know it has that sort of functionality built in and I trust it to work (even if I'd have to have a game or something it can capture from running in the background for it to actually record). That being said, I'm a crazy person and that's a stupid idea - you should actually try one of the programs listed here [http://shop.skype.com/apps/Call-recording-audio-only/]. I'm sure one of them will work.
