Due to the very exciting releases hitting our screens soon, I've decided to start a countdown to see exactly why we've got lots to look forward to. First up, a look back at the amazing Batman: Arkham Asylum. Thanks for watching!

So you wanna debate the climactic showdown with Joker, huh? It's really the one and only part of this game I have a problem with. This game should've been on the top of most people's GotY lists, but then Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 came along and spoiled it. (Full disclosure: I have less than zero desire to play either of those games, ever.)

But this video is nicely done. I like your editing and your voice is really easy to listen to. Good job!

Thank you for watching! So how come the joker battle is the only part of the game you have a problem with?

It's the principle of the thing, really. Or more accurately, about who the Joker is and why he is such an excellent villain. The threat the Joker brings to the table is never a threat of outright brute force. The Joker wouldn't resort to straight-up making himself into some brawny, muscular beast and beating the daylights out of Batman. That's not really who the Joker is. He's much more of a psychological villain, somebody who wears down the mind and sanity of his enemy. And he's much more clever than just juicing himself up with Venom when the Bat finally gets to him. You would think he would be able to come up with a more creative solution than that. He lets his grunts do the dirty work for him while he sits back, schemes up his next plot, and laughs at the chaos that results.

And I also felt that it was all incredibly anti-climactic. Here you are, facing down the Joker once again, after he has pulled off the biggest prison break in Gotham's history and taken over the place, and to beat him, all you do is
pull him to the ground and smack him in the head a few times.
Couldn't they come up with something more fitting for such a stealth-based, epic game?

But other than that, as I said, the game was practically perfect in my eyes. I was going to pre-order Arkham City today, but Play-Asia doesn't have the 360 version for my region on pre-order yet... doh. It was going to be my belated birthday present to myself. (I bought the first game as a "birthday present" two years ago.) Hopefully they'll put it up soon, because I want to make sure I have my copy as soon as it comes out!

Good watch however I did have one minor issue.

It's people like you that make other countries think all us Brits are tea swilling, cucumber sandwich munching posh folk......... TALK MORE COMMON LASS.

Drink a Newcastle Brown and chomp down on a greasy bacon butty, join the rest of us gutter dwellers that forgot what the Queens English sounds like.

Joking aside, seriously, good video.

Loved this game. Almost perfect, I just wished the boss fights had been more interesting than throwing another bunch of goons at you.

Other than that, it was wonderful.

It's good. I like the accent.

But unfortunately I don't think 'good' is good enough with game reviews.

Intro is cool, but after that it could really use more excitement. Possibly a few jokes. Maybe speak up a bit more at least.

Very good point. It's tricky though, I feel like a lot of end boss battles are a bit of a let down. Not that I'm excusing it, but still. The fight was okay, not incredible. Yes, it could have been better but at the same time I wasn't left unsatisfied. Thanks for the feedback! Hope you enjoy your belated birthday present!

Man, I love that game, the combat is really satisfying, and the stealth sections have lots of clever options, although like you said, it's a little too easy to lose 'em. I thought all the boss fights sucked, to be honest. The first time you fight bane was cool, but they repeat that same boss a million times with the grunts, poison ivy was boring, and the less said about the joker, the better.

Nice video. It was pretty well edited, and flowed well. It'd be better with a little more confidence, but that would surely come with time.

Also, a minor note, I was noticing a buzzing sound when you were doing voice only parts, might want to sort that out.

Arkham Asylum came out in 2009. Unless GotY is not done at the end of a year, which rather defeats the point of having a GotY award if you're just going to do it whenever. And all the boss fights were weak I thought, although the Joker was the worst, since it felt so out of character.

I would have most enjoyed a simple 1-on-1 fist fight.

Only other real problem was the game - and I'm likely to be alone in this - was Kevin Conroy. SO DULL. He doesn't have to growl like Chrisitian Bale, but I don't associate an "all-American hero" voice with that of Batman. The only time he has to emote fully ("NOOOOOO!") and I was almost laughing it sounded so ridiculous. To be fair, none of his dialogue was that exciting.

I did love the game though, can't wait for Arkham City, although when I'll play it I don't know (line up for October and November is ridiculous).

Good video! Nice editing and all that, and yes I fully agree that a 60's Batman soundpack would be awesome as an unlockable.

What I believe deserved more mention in your vid is the Riddler stuff. Never felt getting a game's collectibles felt so rewarding, except maybe for Bioshock thanks to it's lore value. The riddles themselves felt satisfying to solve, especially some of the later ones, getting all the character backgrounds really fleshed the characters out (no matter that it's not that new for comic fans) and hearing the Riddler's comments evolve over time was just so awesome. Especially at the end I couldn't stop grinning.

And while the journey into Croc's lair might felt tense, you can't deny that the actual 'battle' was absolute crap. It wasn't even a fight, you just slung Batarangs against his face and kept on walking. That's a rotten shame really. Joker's fight wasn't that bad, yes, but really, you were still barely actually fighting him. It was pretty out of character too, fighting him as a monster.

All in all, still my GOTY 2009 despite it's flaws.

Wait, wait, wait...Arkham Asylum was released in 2009. The other two games were released in 2010. They couldn't have been on the same lists. And Red Dead Redemption was brilliant, in my opinion, but whatever floats one's boat.

Pretty nice review, could do a bit of work on the jokes that you have, and perhaps a tad of the pacing (i feel you would do better with a slightly slower style).
Hope you appreciate the feedback :D

I've just been replaying AA in preparation for Arkham City. I'd totally forgotten how good the combat was! And the stealth for that matter. You know what, I'd forgotten just how good the whole game was!

Your review was pretty decent. Like other people have said, your voice is pleasant to listen to and you covered the main points well. I felt like you could have gone a bit more in depth to certain parts though. Perhaps commented on more aspects of the gameplay mechanics, like the upgrades or challenge modes.

But that's just my personal opinion. I loved the game though, as did most people so it was probably a good choice to do a first video on!

I laughed at the 60's Batman sounds. Nicely done video. It didn't grip me as much as it seemed to do with most people, but Arkham Asylum was an undeniably great game.

I agree with you here. It was bad enough that we had to repeat the same boss fight throughout the game, but to have them tank up the Joker? Inconceivable!

It's funny. One of the main reasons the combat is so brilliant is the seamless integration of the counter attack, but I think that mechanic also really handcuffed the designers for boss battles; to find some way to discourage just standing still and waiting to counter.

And if you make a boss part of a stealth section, the player is most likely going to KO the guy in one hit, which could be seen as pretty disappointing too.
