I'm going to be very blatantly honest here. I think the Dark Knight Returns has a very good story to it, I like the portrayal of Batman and how he feels the need to return to crime. What I don't like is the fact the Media is paid too much attention to, and I REALLY hate Batman's character design. I'm sorry, but in my play of Arkham City, it really hit the nail on the coffin as to what really bugs me. Batman just looks fat. I can't put it any other way, he looks like a muscular fat guy. Hell, the bat symbol's bat looks like it put on too much weight...
What I'm trying to get at here is that I know the Dark Knight Returns has a lot of fans, but just...I don't like Batman's design in it, and Rocksteady bringing that design into "realistic proportions" makes me fully aware as to why. But with all that said, I do like the game's interpretations of the characters. They all work in my opinion, I especially love Robin and Nightwing though.
