Batman's Getting A (Fan-Made) 2D Fighter

The Dark Knight is getting the 2D fighter treatment from some very talented amateurs, and initial footage looks great.

Bruce Wayne's having a good run when it comes to videogames these days, and it looks like the trend is going to continue thanks to Arkham City and <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/110888-E3-Gotham-City-Imposters>Gotham City Imposters. However, footage of a new fan-made game is showing just how amazing the character would look if he got some 2D fighting treatment.

Batman: Gotham Knights is one of those fighters built on the <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.G.E.N>M.U.G.E.N. engine, but it looks absolutely fantastic. As you can see from this YouTube video so far, there's an impressive lineup of selectable characters, including a large number of his rogues gallery, various members of the Justice League, and some random allies.

So far, the only real footage that's been released is the character selection portion of the game. But, admittedly, the visual style already looks lovely with unique designs and great use of colors. That said, I'm a little disappointed that neither Batgirls nor Jean Paul Valley (as either Azrael or Batman) are selectable characters. Are there any other characters you'd like to see in the final build of the game?

Ironically, the My Little Pony fighter looks more badass.
And judging by levels of completeness at time of news post, at least Applejack can kick something. Batman can... get Robin to stand next to him. Then again, maybe somewhere in Batman's arsenal of plans and backup plans, somewhere under "Attacked by magic pony:" is "Use Robin as human shield."

Still, more power to them, hope they can make a decent beat-em-up. Watching Batman hit people is always fun.

The characters look surprisingly like they've been copied from X-Men: Children of the Atom.

M.U.G.E.N is great, but given you can already have Rorschach versus the Joker...
or even Deadpool versus Snake Eyes.

People google teen titans battle blitz and you will find a much better DC super hero fighting for free. It kinda deep and there are some moves they don't even tell you about.

Whatever happened to the DC vs Marvel MUGEN project? I was really looking forward to that. I only ask because I remember that someone had somehow stolen Batman's code or something and released him early, and so the devs withheld an "early" version as they had with their other heroes.

Eh so far amigo, imo this isn't news worthy. We have some still images for a character select screen. At this point it's little more than the announcement of an ambitious plan. (A lot of these look like sprite edits from 3rd strike era capcom titles too like children of the atom or SNK VS CAP 2.)

Well, it looks like they put some effort into it. Two-Face had images from both halves of his face when selected. That's a huge upgrade from simply mirroring his default picture. Would be cool if they keep it like that in actual gameplay.

You know what I thought was really cool? How I instantly recognized the wallpaper at the end of the video, even though it was only a fraction of the overall image... wtf is wrong with me?

They have a lot of work to do if they want to have that many characters and have the game work.
But i do like the art style.
It reminds me of the original MvC.

I have the same feeling about this that I had about FIM. It's never getting past Warner Brothers.... I don't think I really mind that in either case.

Why is everything suddenly getting a 2D-fighter? Not that I'm complaining, but it seems like an odd trend to follow..

Oh my god do I want this! I wonder if they will take some of the voices from Batman: The Animated Series to voice their characters.
