Whussup Escapist; im sure, like me, many of you have greatly enjoyed the 'Battle For Middle Earth' series, especially number 2, and are hoping that EA will announce a number 3 sometime soon D:.

So if they do make a Battle For Middle Earth 3, what kind of features would you like to see in it and whyyyy?

Personally, id like to see bigger armies, maybe more seige elements? And i feel a Dawn Of War Dark Crusade-esque campaign mode would be SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET.

So whatabout you guys? :].

More vareity in the units for each army would be nice. You never had a lot of options on units.

I perfered the first ones construction set up with building on the designated spot in the castle, and needing to claim land to be able to continue building, over the Age of Empires style used in number 2.

Honestly though, I don't think it's going to happen. The Lord of the Rings hype as died down and their so no story left for the campaign mode, unless they use The Silmarillion or The Hobbit. And they didn't have much in terms of epic battles for a game based around army combat.

A Lord of the Rings RTS based on the Silmarillion can only be more awesome if it comes with free boobs and beer in the retail box.

Can you imagine how freaking awesome it would be to lead the armies of Valinor in the last push against Morgoth? Or maybe send Glaurung to raze an Elven city to the ground? EPIC.

Unlikely, since I *think* Warner Bros is keeping control of the LotR license since EA's contract expired.

More units would be a big plus, also bringing back the walkable walls would seal the deal for me. I would certainly buy it, although it would have to work pretty hard to beat RJ Rotwk.

That mod is awesomesauce.

I would want a much better "war of the ring" mode, since the last one was terrible.

Just make it more expansive with more unit types really.

Upgrade graphics and such, the general sequel touch. I thought BFME2 was pretty much there on how amazing it was.

I don't think they can make a new one. I mean, the first 2 have already drained the stories.

I would kill for number 3. I want to go exploring up north, above Angmar and the Misty Mountains. Give me hobbits as a faction buff them up and give em broadswords!

I'll have to let out an outstanding No to this.
They would serve nothing but to start ruining it as they already have.

If they would make something based on the Silmarillion war, you can be sure as hell that they'd ruin it by "BALANCE". Nothing as far as I know is balanaced in that age and game companies and an certain playerbase are hellbent on that everything must be BALANCED!
Agreed, they butchered #2 so badly and refused to fix it because it was essentially the "beta" for Command and Conquer 3 to try out the miserable engine.

thing is, theyve pretty much drained it in terms of units. I mean thinking about new teams, at the very most you could have hobbits and ents for the good side but theres nothing new you could possibly have for the bad side.
Wargs? Trolls? Mumakil? Felbeasts? Undead (i.e. Aragorn's army)? theres nothing left really, unless they put all the preceeding into one army and called them the beasts or some shit
While they could do another time period, I agree that this poses a big problem for another game because it would not be hard for a #3 to come off as a repackage of 1 & 2 with a few extra bits. That's why I think the only way a Lord of the Rings RTS would work is if it was done with some actual care. The second game in particular was so rife with small, accumulating errors and game faults that it snowballed into a great ugly mess.

I just wouldn't want to see them go the total war route and make it big army A vs big army B with no bases or resources. Building up your own custom fortress (and if you could have people walking on the walls) in itself is an awesome draw to the game.

I hear you, I get so nostalgic thinking about some of my old games and if I were to go back to play them, I'd just be frustrated at how good it could be. And if it's on the PC, then I have to remember how to install the three hundred mods needed to optimize the experience.

For a new LOTR RtS, they seriously would need a new engine, developer, faction system, just about everything to make it a new entity that stands out on its own and trumps its predecessors.

it wouldnt be a battle for middle earth sequal then would it? and its a bit late to start a new game based on those films
Yes, it certainly wouldn't be a sequel, which could actually help the game if it pulled in a new crowd unfamiliar with the original titles. Two in particular was dropped on the ground and not even picked up once Command and Conquer was released, so the lack of support to fix what was really broken from the start led it downhill. I think when a game screws up to a certain degree, a fresh start to wipe the slate is the best bet. They'd have to go with a new engine to compete with recent RTS titles, and with that they could take the opportunity to try a different system for all of the little details in the game so that they still make you think back to the originals, but this time they actually work. Even factions could be improved so it is diverse yet true to the original works. None of this *whatever was in the expansion that I refused to buy* make-stuff-up, but possibly making corrupted men and rohan separate from mordor and gondor respectively.

Maybe they can do something semi-original? IT worked for The Third Age...

Really, just think of the possibilities. The campaign mode for The Silmarillion could have three factions: the Elf/Man/Dwarf Alliance, Morgoth's Horde and the Valar Host, played in this order, like in most story-oriented multi-faction RTS campaigns.

Bear with me:

The game starts at the beginning of the First Age, with the first mission serving as a tutorial of sorts, in which you control the Noldor who left Valinor along with Feanor. The "tech tree" gets developed as the player progresses through the campaign, just like in any RTS, but trying to follow the novel's plot: you start with Elven warriors, as they get a foothold on Middle-Earth, then the Dwarves and Men join up as you reach the later missions, up until the Siege of Angband.

This setup could be quite interesting, using the Battles of Beleriand as a background for the game's plot. The first campaign ends with the Long Peace, and the second one lets you control Morgoth's forces, and just like with the good guys, your tech tree follows the novel's plot, with a weakened Morgoth having only orcs and lesser evil creatures, like wolves or wargs, and with you eventually gaining the ability to use corrupted Men and Dragons as Morgoth sends Glaurung with its full strength.

These two campaigns are the main plot, and then a shorter (and more difficult) third campaign wraps up the story, with the Valar Host coming to save the day after Morgoth overpowers the good guys. Think of this as a C&C 3 kind of setup, with the Valar campaign being like the Scrin in that game. I really think that could work, and it would be very entertaining. Maybe even more than the novel itself, which is an amazing, but quite difficult read.

Also, think of the playable heroes. Screw Aragorn, Legolas and the Witch-king. What I really want is to kick some serious butt as Feanor, then make Elf BBQ as Glaurung.

I have multiple, massive nerdgasms from just thinking about this stuff.

I want it to be like a Total War game. That is what I dreamed of it. Sure, the TW games have mods of BfME, but I never liked mods actually.

Unfortunately I don't think EA have the rights to The Silmarillion and Tolkien's other works.

Its been a while since I read the silmarilion or the histories, but I think it would be interesting to have 3 elf factions, one for each of the sons of the elf king.(might have been Feanor, or his dad, I don't remember) and a human faction, and Morgoth's faction. each unique in its own right, much like how starcraft does uniqueness, that kind of individuality for each faction. The hero's unbalance the game considerable, so those could use some work, also, I would like to see an added bonus to the faction levels. Maybe something like in AOE3, but instead of cards, just little bonuses like this type of unit gets this bonus during the game, or maybe you could build certain unique units or buildings, etc. Also the walkable walls thing, that was pretty cool. I like the above quote about the campaign, and I really want to see EA get the rights to this so they could make something like this
