Ok, here we go, i'm having an argument with my friend, and still after the past 20 minutes he doesn't get what I mean. He is saying that he KNOWS Battlefield 3 will be good, just judging from the awards it got from E3 and all the hype and previews it has, and that he just pre ordered it. Now what i'm saying is, that no one, no matter if you are a professional games journalist or just someone who's seen the previews can KNOW if a game will be good before it's actual release date. I've told him that I THINK Battlefield 3 will be good, and that it probably will be, but that there is also no way in hell anyone can tell if a game is good before it's been released. In his defense he said that because EA said it will be good and take over as the "king" of FPS games from CoD, it will be amazing, but of course EA are going to say that there game is amazing, it's not as if they are going to say anything else. Now he has some idea that i'm a CoD Fanboy and that I've said that Battlefield 3 will be shit, which i didn't say once the entire conversation. But my main point is, how can anyone know that a game will be awesome without actually playing it, and by only seeing a few gameplay videos of it?

- Damn these captchas are getting near impossible to read.

EDIT - God there has to be something wrong with this guy, now he is telling me because of all the awards Battlefield 3 has won that it has a 0% percent chance of being shit. So basically this game won't have a single thing wrong with it and will get a perfect 100/100 and will never be beaten. Sigh, this really pisses me off, now apparently i'm a hater and a CoD fanboy, all because i'm saying that there is a possibility that Battlefield 3 will suck.

Well, you can't. You can only look at what you've seen, see if it appeals to you, and if you feel like buying it, check out a few reviews first and sort through your own emotions.

uh....i think that since if the game has a really good track record, no one will doubt the awesomeness....for the most part.

example: Halo, portal, half-life...ect.

Battlefield doesn't really have any bad games unless you count the 2142 mod which is still really decent.

also, have you seen the trailers? Holy shit! those where awesome!

If they're an idiot or a fanboy? Or both? No one can know that, they can guess but they won't know it until the game is released and they've played it. Even then it's opinion...

EDIT: Also, watching trailers can make a game seem awesome but that's just hype. Gameplay videos are more important.

First impressions are the strongest. It is possible, since we each have our own qualitative standards.

For instance: I see it as another modern warfare FPS, thus finding it both boring and a waste of my time and money. Therefore I could claim it to be bad, whether other people agree or not.

Tell your friend he' an idiot. No one can know.

Last year, didn't Medal Of Honor get some award at e3 for best multiplayer trailer or something? And it looked really good (at least to me). Look how that turned out.

Also, remember how excited everyone was for MW2.

Battlefield does have a pretty impressive track record.
Why good sir, could you possibly mean this theme?

OT: Indeed, you can never truly know if a game [or for that matter any form of media] is good or not if you havnt actually played/watched/listened to it first.
