Yeah, I agree. Leave the start menu there, and code the OS to recognise a touch / non-touch device. Hell, you can even have your user tell the OS on first time setup what it is (or the OEM can hard code it in). From there, optimise the experience based on what it is. Honestly, MS have some technically capable teams, Windows 8 is brilliant under the hood. But their vision is very clearly "by committee", rather than led by a single good visionary. And, as we've also seen with the XB1, their marketing and general PR skills are utterly abysmal.
To be frank, I'm waiting til Ubuntu get's more wide spread support from hardware manufacturers and games. I'll make the switch as soon as I see that happen.
