Bazooka Joe a Pirate?

I was a frequent chewer of bazooka bubble gum when I was a wee lad (back when I didn't care if the flavor only lasted seconds until I was chomping down on a neutral piece of wax). I hadn't seen it in the stores for years, then yesterday I chanced upon a rack of it in a dollar store.

I bought a pack and forgot how terribly lame bazooka jokes comics were, but was there a more sinister plot afoot?
