I think the biggest cause of the RRoD which caused the massive debacle was to do with the the GPU and heat. The motherboard bends/warps when it gets too hot, which causes it to stress the solder joints, eventually destroying them.
This particular RRoD cause does not destroy the solder points, it's a pretty easy fix to repair Micro$uck's bumbling attempt at hardware. The GPU heats up the poorly ventilated case. The heat warps the board due to stress from Micro$uck's gimmicky and ridiculous X-Clamps that hold the GPU and CPU to the motherboard. The warped board separates the GPU connections (solder points) from the board, XBox then RRoD with error E-74. Heat can actually repair it temporarily, the towel trick overheats the XBox and lets the solder points settle into place while still hot/warm (eventually this will cause irreparable damage to the XBox).

On Topic: I am not surprised, the thing was designed to fail or Micro$uck are incompetent with hardware, which one do you think it is?
I realise that. I probably shouldn't have used the word destroy.

This sounds entirely possible, especially considering the Kinect needs its own power supply when used on the older 360's. I wouldn't dismiss the this out of hand. Of course, some could still be just coincidence.

As we all know, no electronics device has a zero percent failure rate. Some Kinects will be bad, (or partially out of spec). All it would take is an out of spec component in Kinect that leads to too much current over the USB cable. The extra current from Kinect could slowly fry the console.

As the aryan-super-god-of-gaming-PC-owner that I am, I just feel I HAVE to quote many a console enthusiast on this:

"What is really like about consoles is that you shell out for the hardware -once- and then everything works fine until the next generation. It's so much less hassle."

Not trying to be a troll or anything, just putting it out there :)

You would have thought MS would have tested the kinect with older model 360s just to make sure this wouldn't be an issue lol.

Not all hardware failures cause RROD.

My first 360(2007 model) had a complete disc drive failure so I removed the offending disc drive and continued to use the 360 to play arcade games and to stream media from my computer.

So do they have actual proof that the Kinect is causing it, or are they jumping to conclusions. Has Microsoft said anything?

Microsoft does it again. Not only they made a useless gimmick but they made it so that it kills the console so you have to buy a new one. Nice business strategy. Oh wait, no it isn't. When people hear about this they will simply choose not to buy Kinect.

compared to the PSWii's 'move'?

yea, like that has ingenuity written across it.
I didn't say I like any of that. Move, Kinect, it's all just a useless gimmick. Wii is up there as well but Wii doesn't have a choice. Nintendo wanted to make it motion controlled by default.

Why do people always say that? No you do not have to buy a new one. You can choose to buy a new one, but you don't have to. You can also use the warranty and get a free replacement.
You took it too literally. If someone has an Xbox 360 and it dies, the likelihood of buying a new one to be able to play all the games one has is pretty big. As for warranty, I don't know how long does a warranty last for old Xbox 360's since this Kinect seems to affect only old ones. It's not necessarily a dirty business strategy, but they should have checked their product better before releasing it.

OT: Yeah, I heard this live and was rather surprised a bug like this persists after I don't know how many generations of Xbox.
Your avatar...o_O I can't stop watching it! May I ask what it is?

Moving on to the topic at hand, perhaps it is a coincidence or Microsoft wasn't quite sure how much power of the Xbox 360 it uses.
