Bearded men carry 'more germs than dogs', study finds
Men's beards carry more germs than dogs do in their fur, a study has found. Scientists looked at the levels of bacteria lurking in 18 men's facial hair and 30 dogs from different breeds. "The researchers found a significantly higher bacterial load in specimens taken from the men's beards compared with the dog's fur," Professor Andreas Gutzeit, of Switzerland's Hirslanden Clinic, said.

The study was designed to find out if there was a risk of humans picking up a disease from dogs if they used the same MRI scanner as a vet, reports the Mail on Sunday. It found that all the man, aged from 18 to 76, had high microbial counts, while seven had bacteria which were hazardous to human health.
When the MRI scanners were disinfected, researchers found higher levels of bugs after the men had used it. "On the basis of these findings, dogs can be considered as clean compared with bearded men," said Dr Gutzeit.

So it looks like the dogs may be more at risk from disease from Humans than the other way around when using the same equipment. Though this study would have to be increased and replicated to be sure, it appears men are not doing a very good job at cleaning their beards or their skin under them. Why is that?

*Feels vindicated for thinking beards are gross*

Define Bearded?

As in Dwarven Style Beards?

Or even the most minimum of fuzz on one's face?
I don't think anyone considers "stubble" a beard. I think they are referring to full beards. LOL

As long as you can still reach the skin with soap and actually do so, I am sure it is fine.

How often do these bearded men wash? As someone who occasionally supports a beard I'm washing it every day when I have one. I'm fairly sure people aren't washing their dogs every day.

18 men is way too small of a sample size!

Also, this is glorious news! Beards can finally be used as a biological weapon, mwhahahaha!

So beards not only make you look like a hobo, they also come with the hygene levels of a hobo, in these 18 people at least.

Yup. And over-sterilisation of bacteria is now thought to be causing many of the allergies that we suffer from today.

Could be they just pick a bunch of hobos off the street. Kind of like the Aperture Testing Initiative, except there's no cake at the end, but a bottle of hooch.

I grew a beard about 6-7 years ago. It was initially just because I went through a period of unemployment and couldn't be bothered shaving. Then I had to go to a job interview, and it was long enough that it can't just be shaved off because it fouls the razor, so I bought a cheap trimmer. After the trim, I didn't bother shaving... and haven't since. I keep mine quite short - about 5mm after trimming.

The thing is, you can scrape a blade over your face every 1-3 days (depending on how fast your stubble grows and how neat you need to look for work)... but why, when you can just trim it down every two weeks? Quicker, no cuts, no dry skin, etc. Mind you, if you're one of those men with patch beard coverage, growing one isn't such an option if you still want to look good.

* * *

Ultimately, a lot of this comes down to personal grooming. And all else being equal I would be very skeptical that my 5-10mm beard has more harmful bacteria than the average household pet given I wash regularly.

Although of course humans and dogs aren't equal. What we might consider is that furry animals are evolved in ways to be quite bacterial-resistant, because it would a minor disaster if their fur were breeding grounds for their own ill health. Humans, however, being vastly less furry, may have far less natural resistance because they just don't generally need it.

We might also consider that over time a sort of bacterial equilibrium would develop in humans - we're absolutely covered in bacteria, and a lot of them are neutral or beneficial (e.g. killing off the "bad" ones). However, washing may be perversely sort of counter-productive by killing a lot of the normal skin and hair flora, thus meaning more problematic micro-organisms are more able to gain purchase in the short term.

* * *

Most importantly, we also need to consider that this is media-friendly but lightweight, bargain basement science which should not be trusted much at all.

this is clearly anti-beard propaganda financed by the shaving industry (big shaver) in another attempt to sow fear and division between us all by playing on prejudices, especially those harbouring deep-seeded pogonophobia, while they reap in all the profits. do not be fooled!

Next time perhaps they should cross-reference the amount of bacteria on a dog's TONGUE! xD
